Hundreds Line Up For Jobs At New In-N-Out

WEST SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ― Around 500 people lined up in West Sacramento to apply for 50 jobs that pay about $10 an hour and a local fast food restaurant.

The job-seekers woke up early and bundled up in hopes of getting a job at a new In-N-Out Burger. Some of them already have jobs, but are looking for something better.

"People get benefits, starts at $10 an hour, people get free food and a chance to move up," said Daneen Kenworthy.

Most people are here because they're desperate for work, and it's a tough time to be unemployed.

"I've put in at least 30 applications in one month," said Juanita Sherwood.

3. And the Bushies call those 'manufacturing' jobs!
I keep seeing people on street corners waving those giant signs advertising new condos or Mervyn's going out of business. It's cheaper to hire people than it is to put up a sign. Sad state of affairs this is. Thank God we'll soon have a president who will LEAD us for a change.

4. It saddens me to think ...

... some people might actually want to work there for the free food.

Is it January 2009 yet? It can't get here soon enough to suit me.

5. Sounds like 1980
Things are going to get a lot worse before they get better. I hope everybody keeps an eye out for their neighbors, heat bills and food. Save up, not just for yourself but so you can lend a hand when it's needed.

10. This statement was rather shocking.
"The job-seekers woke up early and bundled up in hopes of getting a job at a new In-N-Out Burger. Some of them already have jobs, but are looking for something better."

You know something is horribly wrong in this country if people are viewing a $10/hr. fast food job as "better" than what they have now. I guess they might be getting some current Wal-Mart employees as applicants.

It's very bad out there, and sometimes you have to take any gig just to pay the bills.

11. In-N-Out Burger is notorious in California for being a great place to work.
They start their people out at $10.00/hr, they DO offer benefits that are way above the fast-food industry average and they have a reputation for treating employees very well. The fact that this new restaurant had 500 applicants is not a surprise at all.

Managers of In-N-Out stores make an average salary of almost $100,000/yr.

They are closely held (not publicly traded), keep their menus simple, stores spotlessly clean, their food is excellent and service is consistently fast and pleasant.

The biggest drawback to In-N-Out? They have yet to expand much further than CA, AZ and NV. If there is one thing I miss about living in California, it is In-N-Out.

15. I'm with you there.
I can remember when they were ONLY in California. I had my first In-N-Out Burger when I was 12, and then didn't have one again till they set up shop in Vegas in the mid- to late-1990s. I actually thought about those burgers a lot they were so good. Believe it or not, but when I moved to Virginia recently -- for a better paying job with good benefits (I'm a senior web developer) I actually had "No more In-N-Out burgers" on my list of cons... :D

13. There is an old joke...
If you want to live like a Republican, vote for a Democrat.

All joking aside:

http://yglesias.thinkprogress.org/archives/2008/10/spreading_the_wealth_around.php">Wages have been stagnant since Nixon

http://yglesias.thinkprogress.org/archives/2008/10/underemployment.php">And no one is talking about underemployment

If this is capitalism, I'll take something closer to socialism any day.

14. It's terribly saddening to see ten bucks as a "move up."
It's a hell of a thing to see a stampede for this type of work, even if it's a lot better than a McJob.

19. How do people get by on $10 an hour???
I don't mean that question to offend anyone and I would get in line for a job that paid that much if it was my best option but I don't get how $10 an hour pays the bills.

21. Wow. If you need a job, come to Wyoming
There are TONS of jobs here. Some places have closed because they can't find help. Ok, so the weather's not the best, but at least you can afford to buy food and pay your bills!

23. Keep this in mind sports fans as you buy that imported car or junk from China
Is this the future you want for America, working at a burger joint asking 'ya want fries with that' for $10 an hour?
