Prop 8 ruling could come quickly

By Aurelio Rojas

Published: Monday, Nov. 10, 2008
The California Supreme Court could rule as early as this week on a lawsuit that seeks to invalidate Proposition 8, court spokeswoman Lynn Holton said today.

Meanwhile, more than 40 Democratic state legislators filed a friend of the court brief on behalf of opponents of the gay marriage ban approved last week by California voters.

The lawmakers -- including Assembly Speaker Karen Bass, Senate President pro Tem Don Perata and incoming Senate President pro Tem Darrell Steinberg -- maintain the initiative process was improperly used.

They say only the Legislature can place a measure before voters that radically revises the California Constitution.

That's the same argument the ACLU and gay rights groups are making in their lawsuit, which also contends the constitutional amendment would undo the constitution's commitment to equality for everyone.

1. Good -- at least I'll know
whether to ice down the champagne left over from my wedding to celebrate -- or start applying for residency in a sane country.

The suspense is killing me.

3. If you're already out of the country, stay there
I'm trying to decide between Canada and Spain. I love Canada, but I do love the warmth.

8. Be careful with Canada if you want to work. I hear it is difficult to get permission to work there.

12. Already checked it out -- I qualify
I'm self-employed in "the arts." They have a special visa for that. The application is very simple. Three questions:

What's your name, eh?

What do you do, eh?

How much money do you have in the bank, eh?

The requirements for Spain are easy too, but the Spanish bureaucracy is a nightmare. You stand in line for an hour to find out which line to stand in. Then, you stand in the next line for an hour to get a number to stand in the next line, where you stand for another hour to be told this is the wrong place -- even though the first guy told you it was the right place. No one knows where the right place is. Or maybe they do, but they don't know where the street is. It makes the DMV look like a dream.

On the other hand, the medical care is exceptional.

5. I'd rather live in a place where my rights are nationwide -- rather than live in a ghetto
Besides Massachusetts is cold.

10. I will be standing on that boardwalk two weeks from Friday
and most likely sitting on the oppsote side of the street at the Santa Maria, drinking vino tinto and having a paella.

11. And your point is?
No snow in Pamplona -- average temp in the winter is around 50

Snow in Boston -- average temp in the winter is around 30 -- sometimes with below-zero readings.

15. No -- I'm not grouchy
I was born and raised in MA and lived in Boston for many years. I've scraped more than my share of ice off my car and shoveled more snow than I care to think about.

9. California will be ok. Arkansas, Arizona, Florida, and all the others - not so much.
Until we get national recognition that constitutional rights apply equally to all citizens of the United States, most people in the U.S. will live in states with anti-gay laws.

13. Unfortunately, you are right -- at least I hope you are about CA
Edited on Tue Nov-11-08 02:11 PM by nichomachus
I hope you're wrong about the other places, but I'm afraid you're not. And the religious bigots are just getting warmed up. The CA drive was a test run for them. If we don't dig in now, we will be looking at our own Taliban in a very short time.
