I'm not in California so I haven't been able to read this prop. Is it possible that the wording was such that people voted the opposite way from their real feelings?

I think most people who go to vote don't pay close attention to more than the major candidates on the ballot unless they're politically active locally.
It could have been misunderstood -- ie, that the "elimination of the right to marry" was what was being changed. I do think the wording is confusing. Almost as confusing as this post.
And I hear there was a lot of intentional misunderstanding promoted. I bet if they had a re-vote it would pass.
