Theater Company Head Resigns Over Prop. 8 Donation


SACRAMENTO (AP) ― The Artistic Director of the Sacramento's oldest performing arts company has stepped down after some artists protested his contribution in support of Proposition 8.

The California Musical Theatre confirmed Scott Eckern's resignation this morning after gay and lesbian artists began organizing a boycott of the theater company over Eckern's personal contribution.

Campaign records show Eckern contributed $1,000 to the voter-approved initiative, which wrote a ban on same-sex marriages into the state Constitution.

In a statement released today, the California Musical Theatre Board of Directors said the organization is "dedicated only to the mission of providing quality theatrical productions. At no time does it involve itself in political issues or ever impinge on the rights of its employees to engage in political activities of their choice. The views and opinions of its employees do not necessarily represent those of California Musical Theatre."

It went on to praise Eckern's 25 years of "invaluable" service.

Eckern's donation had upset many gay and lesbian performers associated with the California Musical Theatre.
