Sen. Jon Kyl vows to filibuster Obama's possible Supreme Court nominees
By John Amato Wednesday Nov 12, 2008 10:03am

I forgot to post this the other day, but I think it's important. Jon "nuclear option" Kyl shot off his mouth the other day to the Federalist Society and threatened to block Supreme Court nominees of Barack Obama only a few days after the election.

Jon Kyl, the second-ranking Republican in the U.S. Senate, warned president-elect Barack Obama that he would filibuster U.S. Supreme Court appointments if those nominees were too liberal.

Kyl, Arizona's junior senator, expects Obama to appoint judges in the mold of U.S Supreme Court Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg, David Souter and Stephen Breyer. Those justices take a liberal view on cases related to social, law and order and business issues, Kyl said.

"He believes in justices that have empathy," said Kyl, speaking at a Federalist Society meeting in Phoenix. The attorneys group promotes conservative legal principles.

Kyl said if Obama goes with empathetic judges who do not base their decisions on the rule of law and legal precedents but instead the factors in each case, he would try to block those picks via filibuster.

Steve says: "Think about that. The second highest ranking Republican in the Senate, just a few days after the election, is already talking about blocking Supreme Court nominations that haven't been named, in response to Supreme Court vacancies that don't exist."

And Howie Klein ads:

...according to CNN exit polls, those who claimed that the Supreme Court was a factor in their decision in the presidential election, broke for Obama 53-45% and voters who called future Supreme Court appointments the most important factor went for Obama even more strongly-- 57 to 41%.

The more Republicans talk, the more irrelevant they become.

1. NOT irrelevant if he can block a nomination.
Is there any legal way to make his life a misery?

2. Time to bring out the Republican idea of the Nuke Option I guess.
I doubt the Republicans can sustain forty votes with the thumping they just took but if they do they drew up the next move themselves..

4.  "He believes in justices that have empathy,"
Edited on Wed Nov-12-08 06:45 PM by BrklynLiberal
:wow: OMIGAWD!! Empathy!! Treason.....absolute treason to look for judges that have empathy. :silly:

That DEFINITELY shows something very scary about repukes. They consider having empathy to be a negative. We always knew that, but to have one of them come right out and say it...That is amazing.

I do not believe he will be able to filibuster. I believe that the new Senate would be able to stop him...
He is spouting garbage..

10. And He Has 39 Other Friends????
It's Ooooga Boooga time...this shitstain wouldn't vote for any SCOTUS nominee put up by President Obama...so he can bloviate all he wants, and I'm sure he speaks for the 20 or so knuckledraggers in his caucus, but does he have 40? Especially in a party that is in the midst of imploding and driving further to the right?

Kyle means shit...he's not on the Judiciary committee where the real action is. If a candidate is gonna be shot down, that's where it happens and once they get committee confirmation (especially if GOOPers cross over), it'll make his theatrics that much harder. So go ahead, you fukwad...ignore the message the majority of Americans sent last week...it'll just prolong the period his corrupt party lives in the wilderness.

Cheers...

14. This last year the repuke Senators used the filibuster over 90 times to set a new Guinness
world record. Sad is that the hapless Demo's never ever challenged them. Unless the Dem's are ready to fight, the repukes will again be able to shut down the Senate. Time to dump hapless Harry. Sorry, nice guys sometimes finish last.

17. They Also Had 49 Votes And The Veto
The organizational rules that Reid compromised to become Majority Leader was the biggest cause. He needed to suck up to Traitor Joe to keep his majority, that's not the case any longer. Plus many bills never stood a chance not due to the threat of a fillibuster, but from the veto.

Let's see how well they hold ranks...especially those Senators in blue states who face election in two years. The moderates are getting to be a very lonely club these days.

I want to remain cautiously optimistic, but always watching to see what games are being played.

Cheers...

15. Congress needs to fix the "nuclear option" loophole
so morons like this can no longer threaten the congress with such things. Filibusters are a part of the system. Kyl is abusing that, or at least threatening to, but still it's no excuse to go nuclear on anything, no matter what side is the majority.

24. Congress needs to fix what? The filibuster is a Senate rule. The Demo Senate, if it had the guts,
should eliminate the filibuster rule and screw the minority.

28. How is this an ethical issue? This is a Senate rule. It hasn't always been on the books.
If this rule is being used in a destructive manner, as the republicans did this last year with over 90 filibusters, then serious consideration should be given to changing the rule. It would be a shame to have to do that. But how far into the toilet are we willing to let the republicans drag us?

polite but very critical, he tries to send me an email virus.
