the pivot from Iraq to Afghanistan/Pakistan
Over on talkingpointsmeme.com is a little paragraph on the holding-over Gates. At the end of it there is mention of a timeline for keeping Gates through "the pivot from Iraq to Afganistan/Pakistan."

While it is no secret that the US has conducted raids in the tribal area, there is also no overt recognition that regular operations are on-going in Pakistan, that phrasing just makes me very nervous.

1. It should make you nervous.
Pakistan is a large country, with nukes, and there is no reason at all to think that outside military intervention will make things better there, or stabilize the country, or do anything good.
