Call To Action: Pastor Issuing 7-day Sex Challenge

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/11/12/ap/strange/main4596614.shtml

DALLAS, Nov. 12, 2008
(AP) The pastor of a mega-church says he will challenge married congregants during his sermon Sunday
to have sex for seven straight days _ and he plans to practice what he preaches.

"We're going to give it a try," said the Rev. Ed Young, who has four children with his wife of 26 years.

Young, 47, said he believes society promotes promiscuity and he wants to reclaim sex for married couples.
Sex should be a nurturing, spiritual act that strengthens marriages, he said.

"God says sex should be between a married man and a woman," Young said. "I think it's one of the greatest
things you can do for your kids because so goes the marriage, so goes the family."

Young said he will deliver his seven-day sex challenge while sitting on a bed in front of his Dallas-area
church campus.

He is founder of the nondenominational Fellowship Church, which draws about 20,000 people each Sunday
and also has campuses in Fort Worth, Plano and Miami.

Earlier this year, a southwest Florida pastor, perhaps having more faith in his congregants' stamina,
issued a 30-day sex challenge.

2. Forced sex promoted by a so called Christian?
Technically a wife or husband can prosecute their spouse for rape. Forced sex is not a joke. Sex is a private act between two consenting adults. Consent is something that is defined by law. Ignorant ministers are one of my major pet peeves. :dem:

Married folks with two jobs and kids tend to put sex on the back burner. And for a good reason - they're tired. He's reminding folks to make some time for sex.

It's a stunt, but it's not a bad stunt.

It's only bad if one person is forced.

31. Yeah, the implied dig at all sex that isn't hetero and married is bad.
But, really, I'm not overly concerned with what consenting adults do in the privacy of their own bedrooms, and that goes for these folks too.

12. First of all, all things are sacred
sex among them. As such, it is something that should not be forced, but rather spontaneously enjoyed when both partners are in the mood.

17. Or not to!
And "no" means "no". And "not now" isn't "not ever", it's "not now" and also a perfectly valid response. I think either partner can reserve that right.

Yeah, we definitely cool on that one!

38. How does he propose "reclaiming" sex for married couples?
Who or what is he suggesting that married couples need to "reclaim" sex from? Unmarried straights and gays, lesbians, and bisexuals? WTF does it mean to "reclaim" sex and if married couples are having more sex does that mean that unmarried straights, gays, lesbians, and bisexuals will be having less sex or be unable to do it altogether?

Well, that article wins my :wtf: moment of the day to be sure!

26. That's EXACTLY what I meant concerning the woman's side
I know my wife and I can't have relations with her when she is having her period. She has a very heavy flow. Point being - the woman is supposed to have sex with her husband every day for a week. What if the woman was like my wife, and unable to perform. What would the church say about that? That was the point.

27. Scuza! I thought you were making a blanket statement regarding "purity"
in OT terms. During the time of the gift, women are considered unclean. Which is sexist.

It's really a matter of personal taste, and recently the Dobsons publically announced that while the regular way is best, all forms of love are okay. So that doesn't let fundie wives off the hook.

And I believe Jesus said that thinking about it is as good as doing it, so there's no excuse whatsoever not to take part in this historical event. :)

The more they promote sex for fun rather than for procreation, the better for everyone is my motto.

32. There's that aspect.

:)

This dude is just selling fundie-ism like anyone would sell a car. With sex.

The more these people disassociate sex with procreation the less the argument holds that others shouldn't enjoy marriage even if the primary function isn't producing progeny. So I hope they market this ad infinitum.

35. And I get a real "methinks they doth protest too much" vibe from all these things.
See, we LOVE sex! We enjoy our sex lives! We do it all the time!

Really!

I have trouble believing that folks indoctrinated with large dollops of guilt, fear and shame around sexuality in general just cast off the chains and start having hot, steamy, deeply enjoyable coitus the minute they get into the safe confines of a Christ-centric marriage.

Particularly if they're not lying about the whole "abstinence-until" deal, I would imagine most of them don't have much of a clue as to what they're doing with their partners.
