My redneck cousin: 'The south will never allow Obama to sit in the oval office' |
|
My dad is a lifelong Democrat. Back in the 60's he was an open racist, but last week he voted for Barack Obama, he made me proud in a way I can't put into words. He and my mom let our redneck cousins spend a week with them, it was election week, and they were in an absolute tizzy on election night.
When Obama won, my redneck cousin went ballistic and hauled his giant, fat ass out of the living room outside to piss and spit and moan. When he came back in he told my dad that the south would never allow Obama to sit in the presidential chair, his words of course liberally mixed with the 'N' word. I take this as a thinly veiled death threat.
My dad wouldn't argue with him cause my dad is a sweety, but if that asshole had said that in my house, my redneck cousin would be thrown out and never allowed back in for even making such a statement.
This is how republican assholes think, if they see someone they hate, they want to kill them, or at least hint at it.
I know that the south contains millions of liberal Democrats, and I know that millions of republicans actually voted for Obama. When my cousin refers to 'the south', he of course means the ku klux klan and their ilk.
I don't need to tell you all here that the hard core haters are in an absolute mental meltdown. Enjoy the Obama years you racist assholes. We got your number.

1. You should call the Secret Service |
|
And give them your redneck cousin's contact information and what he said. I'm sure when the Feds come knocking at his door he'll be singing a totally different tune, and it'll be a good lesson for him.
At least it's what I would do, but that's just the way I am.

9. Very torn over this issue. To do that to FAMILY. For me, that's tough to swallow. |
|
No matter how much an an asshole he is, he's FAMILY.
I also recognize many people do not share my view.
I also recognize that his words approach the threshold of what legitimately should be reported. But he didn't make a specific threat and we all know that everyone everyday says things in a glib fashion which could be considered menacing.
Have I ever, in a moment of temper as many have done literally billions of times, said, "Man, I wish that guy was dead." or "I'd like to kill that guy."
Does that mean I or anyone of the other millions of people who have said something like this at one time or another are leaving trails of corpses in our wakes? Of course not.
I don't envy the OP on this one. The Idiot Cousin's words are right "on the fence" IMHO, and remember even Free Speech we don't like is protected by the 1st Amendment. If I am reading correctly, he didn't even come close to making a specific threat. And he IS family.
No, I do NOT envy the OP on this one.

|
So, it seems to me anyway, in that light, perhaps an actionable direct threat is preferrable in this case only, so the Feds can be alerted.

That Obama uses the special powers Bush got for the Executive, to investigate all the KKK and white hate groups. They are as much terrorists as Ayers ever was, probably more so as to the results of their actions. I just saw something about the "Ayrian (?) brotherhood" last night. Those folks are disgusting, and even if it keeps some of them from breeding, and spreading their hatred down the generational chain, it'd be a good thing.

You worry me, Phred, because when you talk like that you sound like an overheated Freeper, and that's no way for a supposedly intelligent DUer to sound.
Go back and reread the OP and tell me EXACTLY what that man said that was actionable.
Reprehensible? Yes. Actionable? No.

|
If your dumbass redneck cousin makes a stupid comment on election night that sounds like a veiled threat, you take it with a grain of salt. If your dumbass redneck cousin suddenly starts mapping out Chicago, buys a sniper rifle and becomes obsessed with Obama in an unhealthy and threatening way...you call the Secret Service, family or not.

venting. The Secret Service is going to have a hard enough time taking care of the first black President of the United States without getting revenge calls on stupid relatives. If the cousin does anything more obvious or ominous, sure, call them. Otherwise let them spend their time on more credible threats.

6. I've lived with that in the rural South my whole life... |
|
"Save your Confederate money!" "Forgit, Hell!" Etc, etc, They used to hold Klan rallies in a field not too far behind my house, and I can still hear those loudspeakers and the flickering lights on the horizon from the fire. There would be a Klansman posted on the main highway, directing oncoming traffic toward the field...unless, of course, they saw a black person in the car.

These are the birth pangs of a new era, a new age where race and social mobility are no longer commensurable. We now see someone who just one generation ago he would not have been considered possible for a presidential win. One hundred years ago, if he didn't sing or play ragtime he couldn't dream of more than labor, unequal pay, and a constant reminder of social inferiority.
These people (the ones who "can't stand a black man as president") are only a few short generations (they seem to breed quickly) from being culturally extinct. They are already marginalized by most reputable media sources and practically ignored by the rest of the English speaking world.
Don't get me wrong, there will still be a few more generations of racial egoism but the spread of modern culture and the eventual acceptance of it in even the most remote of places will eventually cause a social reformation there, too. It's like the spread of a language or any other form of culture, it takes generations.
Rome wasn't plundered in a day.

|
Edited on Thu Nov-13-08 09:39 AM by texanshatingbush
While this guy's comments may have stopped short of an actionable threat, the "comments" made by all these assholes collectively add up to create an atmosphere--the kind of atmosphere which *encourages children on a school bus to chant "assassinate Obama", *the kind of atmosphere which encourages citizens at a political rally to shout "terrorist...kill him!", *the kind of atmosphere which dulls peoples' sensibilities to the horror of the outcome if taken to the logical conclusion of the chants.
People better realize that they are creating an atmosphere of hatred which enables crazies to do things they might otherwise not do. It's sort of like overcoming an "incest taboo"--once it's overcome the first time, it "doesn't seem so bad" the second time or the third time, until it finally becomes "business as usual".
The Secret Service, God help them, better be very vigilant. And Sarah Palin should keep her f'ing mouth shut.

Not only for our country's sake, the president elects' safety but for him (your cousin) also. Racist hate may have made him mentally unbalanced. You have some hard decisions to make, because he is family. But sometimes you have to protect them from themselves. You would know better than anyone here if he is that kind of deranged

This is the tactic I am using. My father warned me not to alienate all my family, as they are the only ones that care. I have heart failure. I said, FUCK THAT. I came out of the closet. My sister sent a cartoon. Guy sees into kids haloween sack. He says, you have lots, I'll take half and give it to the too lazy to trick or treat. I was enraged. I took it to my parents and was a volcano. My sis is a right wing fundie. My mother is going to confront her. I am too steamed. If she doesnt respond well or closes up, I will go to her church. If they too hate the poor, I will overturn the tables of the moneychangers. I told my family, THE HATE WILL STOP! I would like to somehow show my unappreciation for Palin, that domestic terrorist. She has done more to sow seeds of discord at all levels. Screw the religious haters to HELL.
