UNION-BUSTERS Want GM To File Bankruptcy
Union-Busters Want GM To File Bankruptcy
By: Jane Hamsher Thursday November 13, 2008 7:00 am

Let's call it what it is:

Not everyone agrees that a Chapter 11 filing by G.M. would be the disaster that many fear. Some experts note that while bankruptcy would be painful, it may be preferable to a government bailout that may only delay, at considerable cost, the wrenching but necessary steps G.M. needs to take to become a stronger, leaner company.

Although G.M.'s labor contracts would be at risk of termination in a bankruptcy, setting up a potential confrontation with its unions, the company says its pension obligations are largely financed for its 479,000 retirees and their spouses. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/13/business/economy/13bankruptcy.html

This is about union busting, pure and simple.

No mention made about Rick Wagoner giving back the $2.2 million salary he pulled down in 2008 for driving GM into the ground.

1. No, It's About Saving The Company And Making It Competitive Once Again.
The union as it stands now is a detriment to the company's health. It definitely needs to be retooled and restructured if we are to see GM rise from the ashes. The same can obviously be said for the management and the business model as well, to even more degrees. But the union itself as it exists right now there is inadequate for the health of the company. A whole new union structure and contract would need to be put together that is more conducive to the long term health of the company.

But this isn't about union busting, it's about job saving. GM's only choice might be chapter 11. That isn't because they want to bust the union, it's because as of right now the company is dying. It is a very serious issue going on with them right now and it requires drastic intervention and change. The union aspect of GM has to be dealt with as well in order for progress to be made. I don't think they should be broken, but they definitely need to have a contract started from scratch with a bunch of changes.

2. This is a serious concern dealing with the union protections.
I'm in support of the Union workers, but not bailing out this co. The retirement accounts should be protected and not Rick Wagoners Salary.
