Oh I think the Mormons hit a land mine going after TEH GAYS!
You may not have noticed, but TEH GAYS ARE EVERYWHERE! There are more of us than there are Mormons. About 6 million people in this country belong to one of the three major Mormon Churches, with the largest being the Churh of Latter Day Saints. There are at least the same number of LGBT people, as the lowest number I've seen for our population is 2% of the general population. That's about 6 million.

However, the most frequent number I've seen used is 10% of the population, which is about 30 million people.

So TEH GAYS outnumber TEH MORMONS!

Um, not a good idea picking a fight with a group of people larger than you.

1. What are the other Mormon Churches?
I thought all belonged to LDS (except for the renegade polygamist sect)...

14. Community of Christ is somewhat gay friendly though
they have very little in common anymore with the SLC Church.

April 2007

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - Delegates to the Community of Christ World Conference voted overwhelmingly Friday to add a passage to church doctrine that, among other things, says scripture should not be interpreted in ways that lead to discrimination.

“It is not pleasing to God when scripture is used to diminish or oppress races, genders or classes of human beings,” wrote First President Stephen M. Veazey, who also is the church's prophet.

“Much physical and emotional violence has been done to some of God's beloved children through the misuse of scripture,”Veazey said. “The church is called to confess and repent of such attitudes and practices.”

The passage was added to the Doctrine and Covenants, one of three books considered scriptural by the Community of Christ, formerly known as the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

3. The larger point is that the entire U.S. population should oppose anti-human rights initiatives.
The number of people in this country who are disgusted by a majority vote taking away the rights of a minority group far, far exceeds the number of gay people. Even a lot of Mormons are disgusted, and are expressing it by resigning from their own church.

It wasn't just the Mormons, either. The Knights of Columbus, part of the Catholic Church, was also a ringleader, as was the Templeton Foundation. Many churches of numerous denominations told their congregations to vote against gay rights.

9. The truly brainwashed don't see it as a human rights issue
Because their blind faith in a miniscule part of the book they praise regulated homosexuality to the same "horrors" as bestiality (one I happen to agree with is not a good thing) and witches/diviners. Forever deeming it "evil" and unworthy of salvation. We need to make the churches throw the old testament right the fuck out. If you profess to be a Christian then follow Christ and Christ said love your enemy as yourself and do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Period. Full stop.

11. I realize that some are truly brainwashed on this subject, but they have the power to change.
When the economy took a dive, a lot of long-time "values" voters suddenly decided that maybe it was ok with their God if they voted for the Democrat this time.

There's really no excuse for bigotry against a minority group, and that fact is demonstrated by the tortured logic required of those who attempt to defend it.

12. I excuse or defend none of it.
But it's going to take courageous people within the churches themselves speaking out against a doctrine of hate. I know there already are such brave voices but they need to increase and get louder. And, they need to punish even their own church by not supporting it financially until things change.

13. I know that people are doing that, but I agree that it needs to increase.
One of the problems I see is that some people use church teachings to excuse their own biases. Again, I point to the example of this past election. Many supposedly religious people ignored the wars, the torture, the assault on the environment, the loss of rights, and everything else until it finally affected their pocketbooks. Then they somehow found the courage to go against their church's teachings.

16. yeah, funny how
a growling stomach and empty gas tank, not to mention having to decide which necessary medications they're going to have to stop taking will change their priorities

Although I'm not so sure it was courage as much as it was self-preservation

8. It is not about TEH GAYS. It is abou TEH MORMONS building
bridges to the Fundamentalists to support Mitt Romney in 2012. They are now saying, "See Fundies, we are persecuted just like you. We are just like you."
