Naughty or Nice?
American Family Association's 2008 listing of top retailers and how they recognize Christmas

Based on current advertising, below is a list of companies that avoid, ban, or use the term "Christmas" in their advertising. We urge you to contact the "naughty" companies by using the contact information provided below. We will continually update the list, so check back often.

Criteria - AFA reviewed up to four areas to determine if a company was "Christmas-friendly" in their advertising: print media (newspaper inserts), broadcast media (radio/television), website and/or personal visits to the store. If a company's ad has references to items associated with Christmas (trees, wreaths, lights, ect.), it was considered as an attempt to reach "Christmas" shoppers.

If a company uses the term "Christmas" on a regular prominent basis, we consider that company Christmas friendly. If it failed in two of the three catagories, we do not consider that company Christmas friendly.

A company may be removed from the "bad" list by providing documention to AFA.

*Some companies may use "Christmas" sparingly in a single or unique product description, but as a company, does not recognize it.

3. What would happen if they put their time and energy into helping out food banks instead?
This is not only ridiculous, it's a waste of energy that could be used to do something good in the world.

10. The imaginary conflicts, unseen enemies, elaborate schemes,
dastardly conspiracies, exaggerated slights, Sisyphean struggles, and enormous consequences of failure or success make the most devoted fan of WoW, D&D, UFO conspiracy, or CIA lore look tame by comparison.

If it didn't threaten to overwhelm the media or bulldoze millions of dupe-worthy Americans into being stupid, it would be kind of cute, the way a child's imaginary friends are.

16. On the friendlies list
Perhaps Wally Worlds press releases say one thing but last year I went to Wally during the holidays and the elderly door greeter stepped up to me and said "Happy Holidays and Seasons Greetings" with a rather defiant look on his face. He is still there BTW

17. What is the average Christian parent saying to all this?
"Well, I for one am glad that K-mart and Home Depot have taken on the responsibility of teaching my children about Jesus and the meaning of Christmas.

Saves me the trouble of getting up early on Sundays and taking them to church."

18. I think we should start pressuring retailers to offer
non-Christian sales events. . .and make signs that are in their face.

19. Who really cares?
There is no special mention of a mandatory Christian celebration in honor of Jesus' birth in the New Testament. The birth is recorded in the Gospels but there is no indication that we are to celebrate it every year. Indeed, one can make a strong case that a Christian church is not supposed to celebrate holidays at all if you really want to go fundamentalist. Paul warns in Galatians 4 and in Collosians 2 against being tied to the celebration of days as an expression of piety.

It's all fine and dandy for a Christian church to use the holidays as a evangelistic tool but to expect society at large to bend to the church's will is asking too much. The religious establishment of the first century is what Christ came to Earth to abolish. Why, then, should we strive to become the same Establishment now? We all know the low opinion the Jesus had of the money changers in the Temple and why he felt that way.

There's nothing wrong with a little bit of good-natured celebration and fellowship during a bleak time of year. There's much wrong with it if we demand participation in the celebration as some kind of validation of faith.

As far as I'm concerned the display of Christmas decorations on public property could be abolished right now. It has very little, if anything, to do with the real business at hand in the Christian church.

20. I doubt Christ wanted his name
attached to the winter solstice festival anyway.
