I feel bad asking for donations right now. I know times are tough for many of you.

During the eight years I have run this website, I have never received so many emails and private messages from DUers telling me that they are unable to donate. The economy is awful -- and probably getting worse. And no doubt many of you are tapped-out from donating to Obama and other Democratic campaigns.

I want to be clear: If you feel that you cannot afford to donate, please don't. We appreciate that you are part of this community, and we do not want to add any additional hardship to any of our members. We might not make our goal, but Democratic Underground is going to be okay.

I have never donated to DU because, quite honestly, as a glbt member, I have never felt fully accepted by the DU community-at-large because of my orientation. I don't think I speak just for myself in saying that there has been a lot of hostility directed toward we glbts here -- it makes hard to want to financially support a venue wherein one's own community is not entirely supported or embraced. Beyond this, this past election cycle, in particular, I and many other glbts have pretty much emptied our bank accounts in fighting for our civil rights by trying to defeat Prop 8 and the other anti-civil rights initiatives in AZ, FL and AR.

So here's my offer. I'll donate $100 to DU--and challenge all other glbts to do the same--if DU will, in turn, donate a reasonable percentage of what is raised toward overturning Prop 8. It is, afterall, the civil rights movement of the 21st century -- no small matter, 'heh?

These last couple of years have been bad for us with job losses and husband's health in the toilet but the last month has been awful. My husband was let go from his job of two months when he ended up in the hospital but at least I had a new job the day he went in the hospital. But I didn't do my homework on this new job company and they let me go after 4 weeks because I couldn't do an overnight miracle for them in raising sales. Today we cashed in our very last retirement account, I have never felt so despondent in all my life. But at least we can eat and pay the bills for the next couple of months with the last of the retirement money then . . . ????? I sure hope Obama can do something with this economy and fast before we starve!

They called me several months ago - after the primaries ended - and I pledged a small sum.

I posted here several times asking donors to match any political contribution with one for the American Red Cross - which was running on empty after the Midwest floods in the Spring and the recent hurricanes, or to local homeless shelters and food banks. Such posts just sank to the bottom. And, yes, I was saving some for the DU fund that I knew was coming.

I think that it was irresponsible, Skinner, to keep moving the goal posts for donations to Obama just to give DU a name someplace. First it was $50K, then $100K and last, what was it, $125K?

I think that with every request you should have mentioned the real needy ones among us. After all, we are Democrats. We do not believe in "pulling oneself by the boot straps." This is the Republican mantra.

And many even wondered whether DU will continue to exist once we won the elections.

I've heard some place that about $2 billion - give or take a few millions - were spent on this whole campaign. We should be ashamed of ourselves. With so many out of jobs, out of access to health care, out of retirements, with our infrastructure crumbling, with the economy bleeding, we should be ashamed of these extravagant spending.

I love this site so much I practically pushed a 70 year old Dem volunteer into looking at it. She was intrigued right off, so I spent two hours showing her around the site and explaining the rules. The only thing she didn't like were the ads. When I told her a donation makes them all go away, so signed up right then and made a donation!

Hopefully I'll be able to donate to DU next month!

I want DU to be around for a long time. Small as my contribution is, I'd rather see it go to my DU family rather than the right-leaning NPR. I am reminded of the ancient Incas.
