Priest Wants Penance From Obama Voters - Obama 'Radical Pro-Abortion Politician,' Priest Says
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- A Greenville priest says that his parishioners should do penance if they voted for Barack Obama.

The Rev. Jay Scott Newman, priest at St. Mary's Catholic Church, said that his congregants shouldn't take Communion until they do penance for supporting "the most radical pro-abortion politician ever to serve in the United States Senate or to run for president."

But Newman also said that church law doesn't allow him to refuse parishioners the sacrament.

In their annual meeting, the nation's Roman Catholic bishops vowed Tuesday to forcefully confront the Obama administration over its support for abortion rights.

The bishops said the church and religious freedom could be under attack in the new administration.

They are not going to like the back-lash this sort of thing is certain to provoke.

16. Indeed, Ma'am, There Does Seem To Be Some 'Fronting', Shall We Say, For Baptists At Present....
Given the great disparity between the majority view of parishoners here and the reactionary ideology driven from the Vatican over the last decade or so, it hard to see the thing being settled by anything short of schism, or the dwindling of Catholicism here to a cultural relic.

7. It's this kind of behavior that turned me off to the church
Last time I went to mass because I wanted to the pastor talked about the people of Tibet and their prayer wheels. He said how that god didn't listen to that. That wasn't prayer. Out of respect for the handful of others present I stayed silent - and have never forgiven myself.

At this point I'd be very happy to take this priest in SC aside and tell him to blow it out his celibate a**.

12. OK, now it's time to take away the tax free status of the Catholic
Church. If they're going to interfere this much into politics, there has to be consequences for them. They'd shut up fairly fast if they're threatened.

24. Pro-Abortion Politician?
I never met anyone Pro-abortion. I imagine they exist. There are a few people out there on any issue. Does anyone honestly think people strive to be in a situation where they have to decide if abortion is the best choice? Oh besides men that don't have sexual relations, or at least aren't suppose to and don't believe in using birth control.

How about penance if you supported the Iraq invasion? I pretty sure the holy father was against that.

25. That is the movement term
Anything except their view and positions does not count, even a middle ground position.

The article is pretty fair saying the priest has no real authority to refuse communion, that is the realm of individual bishops and individual dioceses. Also Eucharistic Ministers everywhere have been instructed to still give it out regardless and leave it up to the priest. Then again these types of parishes usually have at most one to no Eucharistic Ministers due to the level of 'orthodoxy' of the pastor.

26. Here's a few interesting tidbits...
Who was Chief Justice of the Supreme Court when Roe V. Wade became the law of the land? Ever heard of a fellow name Warren Burger? How about Harry Blackmun? A couple of Nixon appointees.

Who controlled the White House when "Plan B" was approved by the FDA? You know what "Plan B" is called by it's opponents, don't you? Mr. Bush gave it the green light.

I could go on and on and on. The point is the Republican Party is up to it's eyeballs in the same issues that the religious right wishes smear all over the Democrats. Democrats just tend to be more intellectually honest about the topic.

Perhaps the priest in question should spend a bit of time in the scripture. It's a matter of self-examination as to whether to engage in the Lord's Supper. Oh, I forgot, some denominations fear losing control of their flocks if the allow them to study and follow God's word instead of something they make up as they go.

1 Corinthians 11:2731 NIV

"27Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. 28A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup. 29For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself. 30That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep. 31But if we judged ourselves, we would not come under judgment. 32When we are judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be condemned with the world."
