Prop. 8 Anger Spurs Donor Blacklists... (Your Vote Is Private, Your Donation... Not So Much)
<snip>

(CBS) For supporters of same-sex marriage, the Election Day loss in California seems to be energizing their campaign rather than ending it.

Demonstrations against Proposition 8, the ban on same-sex marriage, have been growing, CBS News correspondent John Blackstone reports.

Now the anger is moving to the Internet, where supporters of same-sex marriage are posting blacklists - the names and businesses of those who gave money to help Proposition 8 pass.

Chris Lee, an engineer who is an immigrant from China, was shocked to see his name on the Web site AntiGayBlacklist.com after he gave $1,000 to the campaign to end same-sex marriage.

"I was completely disgusted," Li said. "This sort of blacklist should only appear in communist countries, should not be found in the United States."

In Los Angeles, demonstrators called for a boycott of a restaurant whose manager made a personal donation of $100 to the "Yes on 8" campaign.

"She didn't think it would be public record," said Jeff Yarbrough.

Anger over the blacklists brought out demonstrators in Sacramento, where Scott Eckern resigned as musical director of a local theater when he was identified as a donor.

While it isn't clear who is behind the blacklisting Web sites, political donations are public record and publishing them is legal. But this campaign is making even many supporters of same-sex marriage uncomfortable.

"I understand the anger, but I think we need to channel it," said Molly McKay of Marriage Equality USA. "Into conversations, into moving forward because, you know again, hate vs. hate produces more hate."

Those campaigning to end same-sex marriage drew up their own blacklist, sending letter to large donors to the campaign to save same-sex marriage, demanding equal money or threatening to publish their names.

The Internet has made open political financing even more open - and perhaps more intimidating.

Sheesh, what maroons... They not only don't know their contributions are part of the public record, they don't have the balls to defend those very same donations.

4. This is karma because...
before the election, the "Yes on 8" people were writing letters to financial supporters of "No on 8" threatening to "out" them as "opponents of traditional marriage" if they didn't give an equal amount to the "Yes on 8" campaign.

It's bad enough to vote for it, but to live so far away and give money to support it? Someone gave $200,000. That's just sad and shocking.

They put their money where their mouth is.

Now they can suffer the effects on their business. If we can bankrupt every one of these bigoted fucks, I'll be a happy man.

10. Blacklisting Has Bad Historical Right-Wing Connotations...
Hollywood blacklists and the House Committee on Un-American Activities - Joe McCarthy

Boycotts OTOH, denote progressive (usually) efforts to withold support in order to effect change.

Montgomery Bus Boycott - Civil rights - MLK

Gallo (Table) Grapes - United Farm Workers - Cesar Chavez

British Tea - The British Colonies - The Founding Fathers

Just a thought.

8. Donor lists are public information, and with damned good reason
Public info informs the voters as to who is donating how much to which candidate or ballot measure. It makes it much easier to trace fraudulent donations, such as corporations ordering employees to donate.

In Washington, campaigns are required to inform contributors that all persons who give $25 or more will have their name, address and total contribution listed to the public record; contributions of $100 or more adds their occupation, employer and employer's address. (This is cumulative: five $20 donations are the same as a single donation of $100.) If you do not want any of this information made public, do not donate more than $24.99.

As others have pointed out, these are not blacklists: these are compilations of public records and are perfectly legal.

15. This man seems confused
"I was completely disgusted," Li said. "This sort of blacklist should only appear in communist countries, should not be found in the United States."

Really? This man is very confused. He's in a free and open society, where donations are part of the transparency we expect in a democracy, but he thinks it's communism? The very same person who funded an operation to deny a group of human beings their human rights? What does he call funding of Prop 8, Democracy?

16. What a pity...
Those poor babies. Aren't they proud of their support of that foul initiative? Don't they want one and all to know that they are opposed to same-sex marriage? I don't get it.

They donated, and now they don't want anyone to know about it? Too bad for them. Someone should run ads in the local papers, listing all the folks from the local area who donated. Surely the donors would be happy to stand up for their sorry beliefs. No? Hmm...

29. ever hear of gay dollars?
It was something I heard about 20 years ago. Gay people stamped their money with the word 'gay' to create awareness within local businesses of how much their livlihood depended on gay people. It sounded like a powerful way to reach a lot of people. Something to think about doing in addition to boycotting.

key people will put the fear of Gay in them.

Examples must be made.

34. Oh yes Boycott for sure
People who actively worked to take human rights away from others need to be called out and their businesses boycotted. the 'gay' dollars would be more about awareness. It could be done in conjunction with the Boycott. It's not an original idea but iirc it was effective. The 'gay' dollars isn't about fear but awareness.

And Apple was very open and voicferous about their stance against the measure. Turnabout is fair play.

If Michael Manning / Cpa, Qlogic Corporation / San Juan Capistrano, CA / $20,000 doesn't want to be treated like Apple, then he should think twice about his bigotry.

Tracy Pickett / Executive Support, Ladera Integrators / Mountain View, CA / $3,000

Garth Pickett / Accounting, Ladera Integrators / Mountain View, CA / $3,000

Apparently, these two are only married because gay people can't. Their union is just one big gay taunt. Not worth staying together if them gays get the same thing.:eyes:

The IRS needs to be notified of this place...

Central Christian Church / Lancaster, CA / $2,490
