TILLAMOOK, Ore. - A mother and her three children survived raging waters after a swollen river swallowed their SUV. They are safe, thanks to the heroics of an alert 11-year-old, emergency responders and our KOIN Local 6 crew who was on the scene to help with the rescue.
Around 9 p.m. Wednesday, Steph McCrae, her daughter and two young foster children were on a bridge that gave way over Faucett Creek in Tillamook.
The SUV they were in drifted downstream about a quarter mile before lodging under a submerged tree. The 11-year-old managed to get out, helped get her mother and siblings out and onto the roof, then the girl went for help.
McCrae sat on top of that SUV for more than an hour, until rescuers able to get the children into lifejackets and hoisted away using a ladder and a hose. After that, rescuers from the local fire department were able to get McCrae a helmet and lifejacket and retrieve her.
