Jogger Runs Mile With Rabid Fox Locked on Her Arm
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published: November 6, 2008

PRESCOTT, Ariz. (AP) -- Authorities in Arizona say a jogger attacked by a rabid fox ran a mile with the animal's jaws clamped on her arm and then drove herself to a hospital. The Yavapai County sheriff's office said the woman told deputies she was on a trail near Prescott on Monday when the fox attacked and bit her foot.

She said she grabbed the fox by the neck when it went for her leg but it bit her arm.

The woman wanted the animal tested for rabies so she ran a mile to her car with the fox still biting her arm, then pried it off and tossed it in her trunk and drove to the Prescott hospital.

13. She had probably incapacitated it to some degree
She might have had a grip on its throat and basically knocked it out but just left the teeth in her arm to help control it.

5. I wonder if it's a good idea to exert yourself after a possible rabies exposure
I've heard that for snake bites you want to keep your heart rate down (how, I don't know) to slow the venom spread - is it the same for rabies?

Either way, this is not a person to be trifled with!

9. I wondered the same thing
but it looks like she was a mile from the car and basically had no other option. It was either that or fight the fox until a car happened to come by AND was willing to stop.

12. rabies is a virus, not a venom
From the wiki: "The incubation period of the disease depends on how far the virus must travel to reach the central nervous system, usually taking a few months."

15. Interesting, thanks! Good news for her (although better news would be if the fox
turns out not to be rabid at all...)

16. Rabies is a virus, not venom
and doesn't act like a neurotoxin or hemorrhagic agent.

You just want the animal put down and examined. If it's rabid, you'll know within 24 hours and have plenty of time to be immunized. The vaccine isn't nearly as bad as it used to be many years ago, and even the bad vaccine was better than rabies.

There is only one case I've found of a human surviving rabies.

20. Rabies is a disease, not a poison
It has an incubation period before it presents.

14. Dang. Is she a Democrat?
We could use someone like her in the House or Senate to fight off the rabid GOOPers.

24. I once had a rattler bite into my running shoe and he stuck there.
I nearly peed myself dancing around trying to get that shoe off. This girl is much braver than I am.

25. The same thing
happened to me yesterday but it was a rabid coyote, we don't have fox here. The rabies shots in the stomach suck big time.
