Bush picks bailout watchdog
Published: Nov. 14, 2008 at 7:46 PM

WASHINGTON, Nov. 14 (UPI) -- U.S. President George Bush said Friday he will nominate federal prosecutor Neil Barofsky to watchdog the $700 billion financial markets rescue plan.

If Barofsky's nomination is approved he would be the special inspector general for the Troubled Asset Relief Program at the Treasury Department, the White House said in a news release.

Barofsky currently is an assistant U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York and chief of the Mortgage Fraud Group, the White House said.

"He's known for his meticulous attention to detail, his sharp intellect," White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said during a news briefing. "And we think he's an outstanding choice to fill this position."
