Religious indoctrination drives me nuts. They get you when you're too young to think analytically and bombard you with bullshit and threats. It took me decades to get over the fear I was being "monitored" by a celestial being (well, until the damn B*sh area brought it all back). All pounded into me by a bunch of hypocrites.

Recently we watched a documentary about the Amish. Think the title was "Devil's Playground". As restricted and isolated as the Amish are, they don't believe in baptizing babies. You have to reach the age of reasoned adulthood before joining the congregation. And before you do, they let you go out into the "English" world to sin and indulge for a year or so. Then you can either come back and voluntarily join the community, or stay away and be shunned. Fascinating.

I like the idea of not baptizing babies, the shunning - not so much. But if they allowed those who abandoned the faith to stay in contact, they'd probably lose a lot more people. What I found particularly intriguing was how many of the girls stuck with the traditional dress. Most of the boys seemed to eschew the traditional Amish wear, but if I'm remembering correctly most of the girls did not.

I never saw anything that I was taught in religion class demonstrated by the people who were teaching it to me. Many of the nuns I had were the least Christ-like people I've ever known.
