4. One of those events where you remember where you were when you heard the news. |
|
I remember thinking that the body count (900+) must have been a typo until I saw the pictures... :scared::scared::scared::scared::scared::scared::scared::scared::scared:

10. Apocryphal Jonestown story re: reporters |
|
I used to work with one of Jack Perkins's sons. His dad was supposed to be one of the reporters sent down to Guyana to cover Jonestown at the time of what ended up being the massacre. For a reason that I can't recall, Mr. Perkins backed out and the reporter sent in his stead was one of the ones murdered.
Whenever someone brings up Jonestown I always think of the guy I worked with and how his dad came *that close* to being killed. I can't imagine how many people it affected directly. It gives me shivers.

13. I remember that vividly |
|
I was 22 and it totally engrossed me for quite a while. The how and why of it all seemed so utterly inexplicable to me. I read everything I found about it for years attempting to understand that particular kind of madness and still have an engaged interest in the subject. When I was diagnosed Asperger's I got a grip on why it seemed so foreign. We tend not to identify as members of groups, much less cults.
Jonestown was the single creepiest thing I can remember happening in my lifetime. 30-40 percent of those poor people were murdered or coerced at gunpoint into committing suicide.
Those were the most horrifying pictures I have ever seen.
