I want to point one thing out about those opposing gay marriage so vehemently:
As a demographic, they skew old. Younger people are far, far more tolerant. And the next generation of voters, now in k-12 will also fall on the tolerant side of the divide.

Not to put to fine a point on it, but the solidest block of anti-gay marriage voters will be dying off soon.

And no, I'm not suggesting just waiting for civil rights, but I am pointing out that the shift in public perception regarding the GLBT community is happening.

It may be cold comfort, but I bet that in ten or fifteen years gay marriage will be part of this country's social fabric.

1. That depends on how religious the youth are.
I'm not sure age is as big a factor as you think.

2. polling shows that the biggest block against gay marriage is comprised
of older voters, and that younger voters tend to support gay marriage. It's not just about religion, it's also about education and exposure to diversity.

yep. and other states will follow
my point was that in 10 to 15 years, demographic shifts will ensure that gay marriage is part of the social fabric in this country, not just in a couple of states.

5. 4 years ago a ban similar to Proposal 8 passed with 59% of the vote in Michigan
Public perception has changed, and even beyond just old people dying out. It's inevitable at this point. And the pro-Proposal 8 people must know that because they spent a TON of money to get that ban passed. And even then, it BARELY passed.
