Those California fires - dozens of mobile homes burning now
This is devastating. How will these poor people cope given the current state of the economy?

1. you'd think
seeing as how they are MOBILE homes, the owners would have...you know... moved them out of the way of the fire.

15. Nope. My wheels aren't even on right now and it would take moolah and time to rent the driver and
semi that haul it. Plus the house has to be emptied and secured before you take off, too.

22. Winnebagos are RVs. Mobile homes are manufactured in a factory
rather than in place, MOVED to their pad, and then they generally never move again.

3. move them where?
They pay rent on the lots where they live. Where are they supposed to move them? Many of them are not actually mobile anyway? Or are you just being funny?

16. No, that's a trailer or RV
A mobile home, if it's a double takes two semi trucks to haul both sides to it's foundation. Then it's assembled.

I think now the term is "manufactured housing."

5. Most "mobile" homes are really pre-fab houses and aren't easily transportable.

6. Mobile homes aren't trailers
It's a huge thing to move one. Often they are two halves transported to the site and put together there.

27. Technically . . .
. . . that is a mobile home, but obviously way different than the mobile homes we're talking about. I'd call that a trailer rather than a mobile home.

7. My, what an amazingly sensitive thing to say!
I'd like to see you pack up and move a double-wide trailer home on a moment's notice when there's a disaster approaching.

14. if it has wheels
there's no reason not to move it if there's a fire coming. if it's up on blocks, that's another thing, but then again, that's not a mobile home, at least to my understanding.

8. It's not that simple
Edited on Sat Nov-15-08 11:12 AM by OhioBlues
First of all many mobile homes don't have wheels because the owners sold them to some guy for $500. Secondly it takes a lot of time, money and effort to hire someone to move them even if you do have wheels.

edited to add this - because I realize you didn't know how hard it is to move them.

23. Mobile homes require a lot of advance planning
and special equipment to move. They're HOUSES, whether they're sitting on cinderblocks or a permanent foundation. Moving a mobile home is just as easy as moving any other house. They're mobile only because they're trucked from factory to final destination.

In addition, not everybody who lives in one is poor. You can pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for some of them and they come with all the amenities you'd find in stick built houses that cost at least twice as much.

19. GEM$NBC has good coverage
They are saying that people were literally running from their homes. Looks like people in every income bracket are suffering here. Looks like 600 - 800 homes were destroyed in the mobile home park - 90% destroyed. That is frightening.

18. BTW, not sure if by "poor" you mean financially
But there are mobile home parks in some of the nicer parts of CA. In Malibu, manufactured homes sit on lots that cost 650K, but have a great view of the pacific ocean. They are like condos with all the amenities.

It's different here in Cali.

on GEM$NBC, they sure look upscale. Still devastation is devastation.
