Have You Had A Confrontation with An Obama Hater?
I imagine a lot of us have a bumper sticker on our car or something else identifying us as supporters of Barack Obama. How many here have been confronted in some way by a stranger who hates Obama?

I have. It happened yesterday in a supermarket parking lot. I was returning to my car with my groceries. As I got to my car and opened the rear door to load the bags, a guy walked up and said to me, "How could you vote for that ni**er?"

I was totally dumbfounded. I just looked at him with a shocked expression and didn't say a word. I then simply stared him down until he turned on his heel and stalked off. I'm not sure what he expected me to say or do. I certainly wasn't going to get into some sort of argument with a stranger in a parking lot. I was unprepared. I suppose it could happen again, since I don't plan taking off my sticker, or my Franken sticker, or my Wellstone! sticker. I need a one-liner to use on such idiots. Or, perhaps, staring them down is the best approach.

3. Before the election
a young woman with kids, at a local 7-11

I bought my coffee in an Obama cup

She asked, how can you vote for that N***r

I told her... so good to see you aree raising your kids to be American Racists... and I said this LOUD so it travelled in the store

The woman stood there, dumbfounded to be called on her naked racism. She dropped whatever she was going to buy, and left the store under the stare of every customer and employee in the store. She was put in her place

Oh and this happened in a relatively red area of my county.

25. I actually ENJOYED calling her on it
the hired help was Indian (as in indian continent)... I have a deep accent, so it was the wet back telling her this

But the other three people were white (so is my skin, but then there is that accent)

And they all stared at her and kids.

I actually felt sorry for the kids. The five and eight year olds did not deserve that social shaming

32. I am looking forward to seeing President Barack Obama show them
how little they really have to fear. As he gets in there and begins to straighten things out I think much of this will quiet down. They are either afraid or bigoted. The first will end, the second will probably go back in hiding.

4. while registering voters for obama
i was wearing my justice for murdered children t-shirt. a man came up and said that obama murders children - that's what abortions are, the murder of children. i was like you dumbstruck and just looked at him. his face was red and full of hate.

23. I have encountered this more than once.
The usual version is something to the effect of: I can't support somebody who supports 6,000,000 murders a year . It's embarrassing and catches you off guard. Also, I don't like to belittle somebody's religious beliefs- and we are talking religion here.

I got this response one time this year during my phone banking for Obama. The person I was talking to threw out the 30,000,000 number. I said I didn't think abortion was the same as murder and that not everyone believes that life begins at conception. He said he knew that life begins at conception "because I'm a scientist."

5. Depends on what they say
When they are blatantly racist like that, a stare-down is best.

I had a confrontation with a person who said Obama couldn't be trusted because of his name. My response was, "Well, he didn't choose his name any more than you did yours. What ACTIONS has he taken with which you disagree?" My husband chimed in with, "What difference would it make if he WAS a Muslim? This Muslim persecution reminds me of how the Jews were treated by the Nazis." The person back pedaled very fast.

9. I am fully expecting to see more and more of these and I am
Edited on Sat Nov-15-08 04:02 PM by RJ Connors
expecting them start getting much uglier the closer we get to 01/20/09. I monitor a lot of the right wing boards and I do not like what I am seeing there. Something has seriously happened with their mental state since this election, and as everyone knows it was pretty fragile before then.

But at some level these people are really interpreting recent events in a real life and death struggle context. Which I find ironic as the real threat we faced is scheduled to be on their way out the door. Having said that I will still not be getting a full nights sleep until 01/21/09.

Based on your description it sounds like you did the right thing. I have always found that every confrontation is just a little bit different than any others that I have ever had and each one as to be handled a little differently. But my first rule is to keep my cool, if I have any hope of getting out of one without it resulting in a physical contest, that is imperative. Which it sounds like you did that very well.

If I do decide that this is going to the mat my first objective is to cause them to loose their cool. The rule is, if I can make you angry, I have control of you. You will make a mistake and I will capitalize on it. That, and show no fear, which it sounds like you nailed that one too.

10. Good lord, you live in Minnesota?
In what godforsaken part do you live? One thing I've always loved about the cities is that even the redneck-yer parts of the population isn't out and out racist, by and large. Man. Scary.

I probably would have done the same thing in your position; just sorta stood their, totally shocked. What's wrong with some people?

14. In Saint Paul
this happened. If you think there is no open racism in the cities, you're sadly mistaken, or you don't get out much.

It's there. It's open. It's just not as common as in some other places. Try going aournd with some Hmong folks for a day. It's eye-opening.

11. A conversation with my mechanic's elderly Latino parents... whoof!
This was before the election. The mother was intensely against Obama. Her English was poor. It seemed most of her viewpoints were coming via Spanish cable or satellite tv. It wasn't about race. She thought he was dishonest, would destroy small business, etc. I mostly just listened and kept a friendly feeling. She said it's going to be terrible if he's elected.. I said, no, let's make a $5 bet that it won't.

So... who knows. Mainly I felt like what she and her husband took away from the conversation was that somebody who supported Obama was a friendly and kind person -- and that felt right to me -- don't add to those walls and misunderstandings.. take 'em down with kindness & tolerance. :fistbump:

17. I probably would have said "uh, I am not a racist, for one thing"
I have sorta talked with two Obama haters. One, who was a Democrat who said she could not vote for Obama. I said that I sympathized because I might not have been able to vote for Hillary, and I also said that McCain was gonna win Kansas anyway, so don't fret too much and please support our downticket candidates.

Another was also an elderly white woman who came into the Democratic headquarters to complain about our workers knocking on her door promoting Obama. I said that I was surprised they were pushing Obama because they should be concetrating on congress and the state legislature - races we might win. She said she was scared of an Obama win. I said something like "relax, ma'am, he's a moderate Democrat and will probably be a lot like Clinton and we survived those two terms just fine."

and for another thing I might add, "because Bush policies have really sucked and McCain promised 'more of the same'"

18. Several
1. Some punk kids who were supporting McCain decided to show up at our weekly anti-war protest and say rude things to us. We handed them enlistment forms.

2. I was tailed for several blocks by a big SUV who kept riding my bumper and was lurching toward me at stop lights. I called 911 and the cops pulled him over.

3. My boss told me on the day after the election that she was afraid of the socialist Marxist who got elected. I offered to buy her a brown shirt.

19. I haven't had any confrontations with any Obama haters.....
but that's mostly because I don't advertise who I'm voting for. I don't have stickers, shirts, pins or anything that will show my political affiliation. On top of that I rarely talk politics with anyone, I vote absentee and only talk politics with those who I know for sure are dems or libs/progressives.

34. Same here - he told me that he was "afraid" of Obama
And that his wish was that McCain would win the election, then die leaving Palin in charge.

My response was that if that happened, all the sane and intelligent people would leave the country and idiots like Palin and him would have to take care of everything.

This is the guy that single handedly made my house take four months longer to complete, cost me about $10,000 in extra costs and who now managing the hardware section at Lowe's. BTW, one of the things he did - repeatedly - was use too long of nails in his nailgun which let him nail pipes, window mechanisms and other essential things buried in the walls. And he is now advising people on what kind of nails and screws to buy.

28. Had a waitress turn really bitchy on me and a friend after she overheard us talking about Obama.
She gave us the evil eye after she heard me talking about Obama, started taking fucking forever to serve us, and would turn her back to us when we tried to get her to give us the damned check.

Her coworkers ended up giving us the check instead of her, so I gave her tip to her coworkers instead.

That's OK, we'll get eight years of revenge (knock on wood) so either she'll continue to drive herself crazy, or one day, she'll wake up, realize life isn't so bad under an Obama administration, and maybe he doesn't really eat babies like Sean Hannity says he does. But until that day when she realizes the truth, I'm more than happy to rub salt in the wound...

I work at an 800 number, since September, thanks to Mc Cain and Palin, there was a big jump in the times I heard the "N" word from callers, it just flowed like the dam was broke.

I also get it from my family, every last one of them hate Obama with a passion. They are convinced he will raise their taxes and impose a Marxist state on them, but this is the shit they hear from 19th Century Fox, Hate Radio, and their preachers or priests.

Makes me :puke:
