I had to tell this young man "there is no way"

I meant to tell about this when I got home from my classes and test two weeks ago. The last day of class covered lagoons. There were several new people in for this one day class. We did the customary intros all around. At the first break, a young guy came directly to me to talk. He was pointing at my AFSCME jacket and asking if Omaha was union? I said yes it is, and I'm a shop steward. What can I do for you? He lit up. He said he wanted to get a union where he worked. I gave him my card and went into the subject. After a bit of interaction, I asked how many work for his employer? He said I'm the only one. I'm guessing he works for an unincorporated town as a do all type. At that point I had to tell him the bad news. You have to have TWO eligible employees to form a union. I couldn't help him. And I was sorry. The way his expression changed. He shoulders dropped. Everything about him changed. This young man understood. Working in right wing Nebraska, he was willing to go against the stream. He knew what it meant, and what was lost. I wished him well. I wonder if he passed his test.

2. Look for the Union label.....
That's YOU Steve, and I got your back every day of the work week.
Thank GOD my step-dad was a union electrician.
My mom is living comfortably because of it.
And my nephew is a IBEW journeyman.

I should be so lucky.

You rule dude.

3. Aw
To have to throw cold water on such enthusiasm is terrible.

I am heart sore for both you and him.

Darn.
