The Iraqi National Intelligence Service is headed by General Mohammed Abdullah Shahwani who once led a failed coup against Saddam Hussein and was selected to run the new security organisation soon after 2003.
“He is believed to have been answering to the Americans ever since,” says the Independent, which suggests that this is one of the best-known secrets among Iraqis.

The White House declined direct comment on the revelation, implicitly confirming that it is true.
No doubt, it is a fact of life in Iraq that everyone who matters is under surveillance. And, according to The Independent, the Iraqi domestic intelligence service is definitely a mighty tool against Iran.
The Independent states that one of the main missions of the Iraqi intelligence “is to spy on Iranians, employing much the same cadre of intelligence officers who carried out this task for Saddam Hussein”.
According to the Iranian priority agenda, stability in Iraq under US military occupation is the last thing the Iranians want. They know only too well that American guns are already trained against them and the only reason that the safety catches are still on is that the US is in no position to wage another war in the region while Iraq remains unstable. So it is a circumspect and logical approach to have American forces pinned down till all attack plans against Tehran nuclear reactors are jettisoned.
In sum, if it is true that the US is pulling the strings of the Iraqi intelligence service, one could only imagine the extent of US involvement in Iraq. A read between the lines would also affirm that the US has no intention to leave Iraq completely now, next year or in the next decade, but wishes to maintain certain military bases similar to the ones in Germany, the Philippines or Japan.
