On what topic might a Free Republic thread and a Democratic Underground thread read similar?
I was just reading a thread about autos, makes, models, likes and dislikes.
A great thread with interesting anecdotes and discussion of car trouble, personal favorites and buyers history.

I think general life experience, not political or religious, stories span that partisan gap.

I don't go there, never have, and probably won't (based on some cross posted freeper idiocy I see shared on DU)

Within what other topics (maybe ethics reform?) does the discussion become parallel?

Different subjects, but the hate is the same. Both groups share intolerance.

Generally, they have no sympathy for other than domestic pets, and dogs over cats, but that is the only topic I have seen that unites both groups.

That's something refreshing to hear. Maybe there is some kind of soul over there. Maybe an ittybitty one, but that would be a start. Step One is learning to love something outside one's self.

20. Articles in the news about human misfortunes
I particularly remember the debates on those who go mountain climbing, get stuck and have to be rescued. Varying opinions and arguments on whether or not society owes them a rescue. Both DUers and Freepers divide and debate along the same lines.

But honestly the examples people posted above don't resemble FR threads at all. Some of the arguments made by people are the same sentiment as those arguments made by Freepers but on DU a lot of people disagree with those arguments.
