CNN - JUNE 30, 2009-WITHDRAWAL - IRAQI CABINET VOTES TO KICK US OUT!!!
Edited on Sun Nov-16-08 01:56 PM by kpete
BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- The Iraqi Cabinet on Sunday approved a security pact that would set the terms for U.S. troops in Iraq.

The agreement sets June 30, 2009, as the deadline for U.S. troops to withdraw from all Iraqi cities and towns, Iraqi government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh said.

The date for all troops to leave Iraq will be December 31, 2011, he said.

These dates are "set and fixed" and are "not subject to the circumstances on the ground," he said.

Twenty-seven of the 40 Cabinet members in attendance voted in favor of the agreement, said Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari. One minister abstained.

29. Neither Freedom nor Democracy have gotten anywhere near Iraq
This won't make it so. They will be embroiled in sectarian violence that will tear their country apart even more than we have, but it's going to happen, now or later. We brought it on but we can't stop it.

if the democrats wanted us out they would have cut off funding when they gained the majority. You would have to be naive to believe Obama will be any different. There is that new world class embassy they are still pumping millions of dollars in to, you think we are going to give that luxury up to a bunch of Iraqis?

34. If the Democrats had cut funding, we'd be swearing in McCain in January...
As much as I hate this illegal war of aggression, there's no way that cutting funding would have helped us. You can NOT just "cut funding" during a clusterfuck. Period.

Bush had his chance to pull out *and* declare victory the first time we were asked to leave. Remember that?

"On Saturday, July 14, 2007 Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki made a statement saying that "Iraqi forces are capable and US troops can leave any time they want". http://english.aljazeera.net/NR/exeres/5A77F64F-54C5-4524-AC77-7F922532C06D.htm

While I never expected George W Bush to live up to his word (we'll stand down as the Iraqis stand up), I *do* expect President Obama to do so. Anything less is totally unacceptable. It's up to us to hold his feet to the fire and end this farce of a war.... just because we got "our guy" elected does NOT mean he gets a pass on ANYTHING....

Peace,

Ghost

35. You must not have been paying any attention over the last 2 years
you are making the same bullshit excuses that the democrats have been making. Cutting funding would not have cost us the election any more than going in there in the first place cost Bush the election in 04. It's a matter of framing the issue the way you want it framed. The democrats are perfectly capable of doing that even if they pretend that they aren't. The simple sad truth is that they have absolutely no intention of getting out of Iraq and they will come up with excuse after excuse not to. After 2006 the excuse was that they didn't have enough votes to over turn a veto or a fillibuster. The new excuse will be that things are much better now and if we leave things will turn to chaos. In fact Obama is already starting this theme, after he won the primaries he made it clear that withdraw of troops would now depend on the conditions on the ground.

I hope that I am wrong. But hope really means nothing, I've seen enough over the last 2 years to know that we won't be getting out of there any time soon. You might find that totally unacceptable but that's the reality so you better start preparing your excuses for why we should continue to support the democrats eventhough they have no intention of getting us out of that fucked up situation, 2012 isn't that far away.

41. Bullshit excuses?
Have you ever served in the military??

I've seen the spinelessness of our jellocrats in congress, and I've been *highly* disappointed by Pelosi, Reid, & Conyers. To say that I haven't been would be a lie, but I'm a Democrat, not a democrat, so I will continue supporting Democrats like I have all my life.

Believe me, I'll be the first one to put them down if & when they royally fuck up... I don't try to make excuses for complicity or spinelessness.

43. I don't mean that in a rude way, my apologies if it coms off that way. But they are bullshit excuses
As of 2006 they have had the power to get us out of Iraq, in fact they not only had the power but they also had the political will to do so. Yet they refused to do anything giving us bullshit excuses (in this case that it will cost them the election). Just like they refused to do anything about illegal wiretapping (in fact they gave immunity to those phone companies). Just like they refused to do anything about the various other abuses of power from the Bush administration.

Don't get me wrong, I vote democrat too. But the only reason I do so is because the alternative is much worse. Until we get some real leadership in this party nothing will change, it sucks to hear that but it's true. So don't expect to be out of Iraq anytime soon, if you are expecting this then you will be just as disappointed as you were after the democrats gained the majority in 2006 and then refused to do anything with that majority.
