2. Yes. I live in a town funded by tourism and a pulp paper mill. |
|
The tourism part has dropped way off, the mill is hanging in there. If it goes under, we will be in a bigger world of hurt.

3. While these job losses are severe, many who work at DHL in Wilmington do not live in Wilmington |
|
The article gives us incomplete info on how many in Wilmington will lose their jobs.

Was it unexpected? Was your job loss caused by our crappy business atmosphere?

Thurs PM I was informed there was no work for me on Fri.
It was a graphic design job at a sign company two days a week. Monday and Friday. But they paid me $15.00/ hr under the table. My 3 day a week job pays me $10.00 with taxes.
No one around here wants to give a FT job...
How the hell am I sposed to live off 800.00 a month?! Thankfully I dont have to do it myself. Theres no way I'd be able to.
300.00/mo heat bills are coming soon. :banghead:
 Thanks Tom.
Seriously. Thanks for caring. :loveya:

8. This is always the plight of the "company town" |
|
Edited on Sun Nov-16-08 05:44 PM by SoCalDem
Towns need to be careful when they select their elected officials, since those are the people who court and satisfy demands of companies who do "biddness"..
When any one industry gets a "monster share" of the jobs offered and available in a community, the seeds are sown for future disaster. Corporations are avaricious by nature, and after they have gobbled every last concession from a community, they start looking elsewhere for the next sucker town who would "appreciate " them more.
When businesses were locally owned and operated, they had a real connection to the community, but the "big-shots" are only interested in the bottom line, and those employees and the employees of peripheral businesses that complement them, are no more important to them, than the hammer in the maintenance man's toolbox.. totally replaceable

"deals" cut by shifty politicians..when the tax-holiday expires, they pack their shit up and move to the next sucker..
We have an empty Home Base store with an ENORMOUS parking lot..118K sq ft.. It's been empty for TEN years..Our ccity cops patrol it to keep it from being set afire, it's an eyesore, and the shopping center it once anchored, died too..so there are about 15 empty "stores" that flank it....and guess what? We are putting tilt-ups up all over town for "new" clients..:eyes:

12. I live in New Haven, which has Yale. Everlasting I guess. |
|
Hubby works at city hall, in charge of everything homeless. If he goes, so does the city's homeless agenda. That's no deal to the city now but who knows what will happen? There have been many layoffs...
The value of our house continues to be at a level about $90k above what we owe. But that is mainly because of the "anchor" of our neighborhood's Orthodox synagogue since congregants must walk to shull (Joe Lieberman lived about 4 blocks from my house, but in a more affluent neighborhood).
For now New Haven is hurting but not completely down and out. We don't manufacture anything anymore (Colt Repeating Arms and Winchester closed down over the past few years). We have theatre, arts, restaurants, little boutiques (that come and go), no mall but an Ikea.
Thank god for Yale is all I can say...

19. Harvard just announced it's cutting back |
|
Harvard has more money than most countries. It's endowment is huge and it makes more money on its money than anyone -- who says insider trading doesn't work. Harvard made 26% on its endowment last year and is on track to make almost 10% this year -- while the rest of the economy is in double digits the other way.
But, they're still going to lay off.
