Edited on Mon Nov-17-08 01:59 AM by Fumesucker
I didn't write this, it was Loneoak over at balloon-juice.com but I thought it just about perfect..

I kinda think Obama should go down to Gitmo, sit down with each detainee that is going to be released, apologize, write them a pardons and personally sign it, hand them citizenship papers if they want them, and $1M cash in a suitcase.

Edit: Another perceptive poster, TenguPhule, in comments had this piece of wisdom also, I think it would be an excellent addition to the ceremony.

Turn over Bush and his entire admin + lawyers to the detainees to do with as they please in exchange for waiving all liability from the new government.

2. Each and every inmate of Gitmo
If they weren't committed psycho terrorists BEFORE we locked them and tortured them, they are now.

I have no idea what to do with them... but I don't think an apology plus $1M is going to make them like us... or even hate us a little less.

I know that I would be dedicating the rest of my life to the destruction of whoever did that shit to me.

I don't have a better answer.

3. on the right track
how about instead of just giving $1 Million, find out what the village they came from needs and buy them some supplies, like tractors and livestock, or construction materials. Explain nothing we do could possibly make up for the pain and humiliation they have endured, the best we can do is apologize, set them free right away, and give them the means to go back home and improve the lives of their friends neighbors and loved ones.... realistically they will always hate America for what has been done to them, but maybe if they are put in a position to make positive change in their home communities..

lol and they each get to personally waterboard bush/cheney/rummy/etc... for a good 15-60 minutes, make them form naked human pyramids and attack them with rottweilers while tasering their testicles

5. and a smile comes across my face
and happy returns to my heart reading what you said. I personally want the perpetrators to live a long life, with lots of time on their hands to think about what they've done. Thats what I really want. Behind bars in a rubber room with only a small window if they really stretch hard they can see out of and let there be a cemetery there for them to see.

4. send them to The Center for Victims of Torture
http://www.cvt.org/main.php/HealingServices

We believe survivors of torture can recover from the traumas that they have suffered. Our healing services staff helps that process.

Through individual and group counseling, survivors can reclaim their dignity and rebuild their lives. They can heal physically, mentally, and emotionally.

When torture survivors come to CVT they may be suffering physically, mentally and spiritually. They may have depression or posttraumatic stress disorder.

Torture survivors often experience:

• Bad dreams at night
• Trouble sleeping
• Weight gain or loss
• Feelings of sadness, anger, despair
• Forgetfulness or concentration problems
• An inability to control thoughts or memories

If you or someone you know has been exposed to torture and is experiencing any of these symptoms, we can help.

We operate healing centers in Minneapolis and St. Paul, as well as in Liberia and Sierra Leone in West Africa.

CVT staff is also available to consult with other health and human services providers who are caring for torture survivors. Consultation requests can be made by calling 612.436.4800.

7. What a wonderful idea
But why stop there?

Perhaps job training as airline pilots?

Perhaps instead of the proposed "freedom tower" to be built at the WTC site, the taxpayers can fund the construction of a colony for them there? Fatwa Tower.

As an added bonus, why not arrange to have OIF and OEF veterans brought before them to be publicly caned.

and ALL the bomb making materiel their little hearts desire.

8. Yea...that's cute
Stupid but cute.

Here's a real plan.

Step 1. Close Gitmo and move the prisoners into a real penal system. Military jails most likely.
Step 2. Separate the wheat from the chaffe. Figure out who really conspired against the US (and which can be proven with real evidence) versus victims of circumstance.
Step 3. Deport the victims of circumstance to any country that will take them.
Step 4. If not able to deport, try to find a way to transfer them to US society. Some sort of Parole Program perhaps. (Note: this idea kind of sucks).
Step 5. Prosecute the rest in real military courts.
Step 6. Have entire transfer completed in 18 months.
