run as an "Independent" anyway INSTEAD of just accepting his loss. This bothered me the most of all his transgressions because I live in CT.

He ceased to be a Democrat at that point...and he continued undermining Democrats from that point on.

4. He LOST the democratic nomination for his senate seat, ran as an
independent, got a lot of republicans to vote for him, and he supported mcCain/paLin over Obama/Biden in the presidential race. How is he a dem anymore?

The dems in Ct. spoke loud and clear. He is not wanted in the party.

5. I chose "other" because of all those reasons and more but I don't hate Lieberman.
I try not to hate anyone. However, I feel strongly that Lieberman should be stripped of his committee leadership because of numerous actions on his part, including campaigning for the Republican candidate for president and down-ticket Republicans and giving a nasty anti-Democratic speech at the RNC that included cheap shots at Democratic candidates.

6. He made a case for siding with McCain, based on national security.
If he had left it there (even though it was despicable) it would have been one thing. But he campaigned for repub candidates all down the line. Even locally I believe. So the issue of just backing McCain is BS. He sided with the repubs all the way.

21. So you still can't back up your assertion?
My not providing a response to your questions is not "proof" your assertion is correct. So, back to the board for you. Remember, show your work.

In question: "His pandering to Israel at the exclusion of everything else "

Any proof? Sorry, but "When was the last time anyone remembers him being out front on an issue that wasnt tied to the defense of Israel?" is not proof it is yet another assertion of opinion made to appear to be fact. Of course, you could also try to prove that "fact," but stick to the reason you voted 'other.'

Domestic policy

Consumer protection
In February 2005, breaking ranks with fellow Senate Democrats, Lieberman voted for the Class Action Fairness Act of 2005, S. 5, which is a bill to curtail the ability of plaintiffs to file class action lawsuits against corporations in federal courts. The bill was backed by the White House and business groups as an essential tort reform measure that would reduce what they said was a debilitating number of frivolous lawsuits. The bill was opposed by consumer advocacy groups and trial lawyers who argued that many valid claims against corporations would be dismissed, leaving consumers without legal recourse.<36><37>

Education
Lieberman championed experimental voucher programs, which would redirect some education funding directly to parents, who could apply it towards paying for the public or private school of their choice.<38>

Lieberman has called Bush's No Child Left Behind Act plan a "progressive piece of legislation" which has been insufficiently funded. He said, "A month after he signed the law, President Bush under funded it by $6 billion less than was promised in the legislation. This is creating greater pressures on our schools to perform and educate our kids - which is appropriate - but without giving them sufficient resources to make it happen."<39> He has repeatedly criticized the administration to this effect.<40>

With Lynne Cheney, Richard Lamm, Saul Bellow, and others, Lieberman co-founded the American Council of Trustees and Alumni (ACTA), a controversial educational organization which released the post-9/11 report titled "Defending Civilization: How Our Universities Are Failing America and What Can Be Done About It" that criticized universities for evidence of anti-Americanism.<2>

Entertainment industry
Lieberman has been critical of the entertainment media.<41> On November 29, 2005, Lieberman co-sponsored the Family Entertainment Protection Act, which was introduced by Hillary Clinton, S.2126. The act is intended to protect children from what he says is inappropriate content found in video games. He has denounced the violence contained in video games and has attempted to regulate sales of violent video games to minors, arguing that games should have to be labeled based upon age-appropriateness.<42> Regarding Grand Theft Auto, he said, "The player is rewarded for attacking a woman, pushing her to the ground, kicking her repeatedly and then ultimately killing her, shooting her over and over again. I call on the entertainment companies—they've got a right to do that, but they have a responsibility not to do it if we want to raise the next generation of our sons to treat women with respect."<43> He voted for the Communications Decency Act.<44>

Environment
Lieberman co-sponsored the Clean Air Act (1990), introduced legislation in 1991 to give consumers more information about the dangers of pesticides, and has addressed the need to limit global warming.<45>

Lieberman has stated that the US population has to accept responsibility for global warming, and voted "yes" on banning drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.<46> Lieberman voted yes on reducing oil usage by 40% by 2025 (instead of 5%). Lieberman voted against Gale Norton as Secretary of Interior, and voted for funding for greater risk assessment by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Lieberman has even gone as far as saying he wants to raise mileage standard to 40 mpg.<47> Lieberman voted for the administration-backed Energy Policy Act of 2005;<48> facing criticism, Lieberman called the bill imperfect but good for Connecticut, citing a saving of $800 million for Connecticut electricity customers.<49> Lieberman has been a vocal critic of Bush's environmental policy.<50><51>

‘‘Lieberman-Warner Climate Security Act of 2008’’
Main article: America's Climate Security Act of 2007
Also more commonly referred to as the "Cap and Trade Bill", proposed to ration (cap) carbon emissions in the U.S., and tax or purchase (trade) Carbon credits on the global market for greater U.S. alignment with the Kyoto protocol standards and goals. The current bill is almost 500 pages long, and provides for establishment of a federal bureau of Carbon Trading, Regulation, and Enforcement with mandates which some authorities suggest will amount to the largest tax increase in the history of the United States. http://lieberman.senate.gov/documents/amendment.pdf

I disagree with most of these, except for the environment-related ones, but none of them is related to Israel in any way!

And Tony Blair has similar foreign policy views to Lieberman, and betrayed his party over them at least as badly. What motivations do you ascribe to him?

26. how can there be "proof' for motivations .. all we are saying is that
Edited on Mon Nov-17-08 04:21 PM by TheCoxwain
if Israel defense is the most plausible premise that explains his IDIOTIC pro Iraq war stance after the WMD rationale became a national punch-line ....

Let's see why you might favor the war...

1) Neo-con agenda of US expansionism ( Nothing in Lieberman's history suggests that he is a neo-con)
2) Bring Freedom to the world ( I doubt that even Bush believes that BS)
3) OIL ( Lieberman has nothing to gain from Oil Money that we know of)
4) A US military presense in the middle east enhances Israeli security
5) Any other reason that you can think of.

Do an analysis - what is the most likely factor influencing his stance ... Do you still want proof?

28. So, again, no proof, just conjecture.
Again, while you provide a good list of possible reasons for his "IDIOTIC pro Iraq war stance," you showed NO REASON. To state it is all because of Israel or as the other poster claimed, "His pandering to Israel at the exclusion of everything else". So, again, no proof was submitted just vague conjecture and speculation be presented as fact.

29. A conjecture is a guess -- What is stated is little more reasoned -- If you are unwilling to see it
that is your prerogative...

and BTW why are you getting so defensive about it ? So what, if Lieberman's stance is driven by "Israeli-defense-at-all-costs" sentiment?

I believe NATO expansion is nothing but a sell out to the Lockheed Martins and the Boiengs -There was no bloody reason to increase NATO membership at the end of the Cold War..

I believe Bush went to war for OIL ...

Do I have proof for either? - NO - But It's an educated inference.. and expressing my thoughts does not make me illogical.

Not everything we do or say has to be backed by irrefutable evidence - There is common sense and intuition that we all are gifted with -- so sir, do not be so offended if some of us choose to express our views.

33. And more conjecture.
Things aren't as "well reasoned" as you apparently think. It is easy to show motivations for Bush's reasons for war, though some still, mistakenly believe it to be 9-11, his actions and other speeches are proof for his actual reasons.

"Do I have proof for either? - NO - But It's an educated inference.. and expressing my thoughts does not make me illogical." Still a guess. However, the difference, you can make that guess based on fact. Also, I said nothing about "illogical."

"Not everything we do or say has to be backed by irrefutable evidence - There is common sense and intuition that we all are gifted with -- so sir, do not be so offended if some of us choose to express our views." Then provide the basis of your conjecture, or, is it as I suggested, "just following the lead of idiotic tripe?"

"BTW why are you getting so defensive about it ? So what, if Lieberman's stance is driven by "Israeli-defense-at-all-costs" sentiment?" Because it comes down to an age old stereotype, Jews are more loyal to others (and now with Israel being a reality, more loyal to Israel). It is an anti-Semitic canard which crops up when anyone suggests that Israel is more important to Jews than their native country, especially when that Jew has some power/influence.

So, can you prove or even provide any information that Lieberman "...is pandering to Israel at the exclusion of everything else?" OR "should be called Senator for Israel?"

18. Never investigated Bush
Arguably it's part of his rump-kissing of Bush, but even a Republican has to admit he didn't investigate the Bushies in areas that deserved investigation (and with Bush, it's like hitting the broad side of a barn: if you don't hit, it's because you never shot).
