An Open Letter to the New York City Board of Elections
Tim Robbins
Posted November 17, 2008 | 02:48 PM (EST)

Mr. Gregory C. Soumas
Board of Elections in the City of New York
Executive Office
32 Broadway
New York, NY 10004-1609

November 17, 2008

Dear Mr. Soumas:

I would like to publicly apologize for being such a dim-witted dilettante on Election Day. I was under the naïve assumption that I could vote where I voted in the last two elections. Your thoughtful letter pointed out that if I had voted in the recent primary election in September I would have discovered that I was no longer registered in the polling place I have voted in since 2004. Considering your position at the Board of Elections and your deep respect for the democratic process I must assume that my local 14th St. poll worker, Betty J. Williamson's assertion that my name was on the active voter rolls for the primary in September of this year was erroneous and that she must be as confused and wrongheaded as I am. If Ms. Williamson saw my name in the book in September that would mean that you are lying. Certainly you wouldn't lie about a thing like that. That is unbecoming of a man of your bureaucratic stature. And why would anyone in the Board of Elections be eliminating legitimate voters from the rolls in late September and October of 2008? That's just crazy and un-democratic.

I should also apologize for the misguided actions of Justice Paul G. Feinman in issuing a court order on Election Day allowing me to vote on 14th St. He apparently thought that a printed out record from your own Board of Elections computer verifying my polling place as 14th St was justification for issuing the court order. If he had only thought to contact you, you could have helped him understand the logic and wisdom of eliminating my name from the book on 14th St. where I have always voted and leaving my name registered at a place I have never voted.

I must also thank you for sending your letter not to me but to all the major newspapers in the New York area and across the internet. I understand it was your way of clearing up this matter and for that I am grateful. I am particularly appreciative of your sending a copy of my voter registration card with my home address and driver's license number to all the newspapers and, by extension, to millions across the internet. What celebrity dilettante wouldn't want his private information made public? What kind of snob gets angry that his family's safety might be compromised? It comes with the territory, right? I was thinking of returning that favor by publishing your home address in this letter but then I thought that maybe one of the thousands of New Yorkers that were taken off the voter rolls in the last two months might not understand what a patriotic upstanding man you are and might show up at your doorstep with the misguided assumption that you are a petty vindictive corrupt scumbag.

Tim Robbins
New Yorker since 1961
Voter since 1976

P.S. If anyone reading this letter had a similar experience on Election Day it can and should be reported at 866ourvote.org.

11. Hey Lerk, I have a question for you, and I thought I'd ask now before
I forgot about it:
What is the etiology of the expression "snap!"? I've heard it a few times lately and decided to ask the next person I "heard" say it.
Thanks!

40. Some people say it is from Biz Markie's 1989 "Just A Friend"
Included the lyrics for content (video at: http://lovesongsinhiphop.com/just-a-friend-biz-markie.htm)

So I came to her college on a surprise visit
To see my girl that was so exquisite
It was a school day, I knew she was there
The first semester of the school year
I went to a gate to ask where was her dorm
This guy made me fill out a visitors form
He told me where it was and I as on my way
To see my baby doll, I was happy to say
I arrived in front of the dormitory
Yo, could you tell me where is door three?
They showed me where it was for the moment
I didn't know I was in for such an event
So I came to her room and opened the door
Oh, snap! guess what I saw?
A fella tongue-kissin' my girl in the mouth,
I was so in shock my heart went down south
So please listen to the message that I say
Don't ever talk to a girl who says she just has a friend

55. I'm not exactly sure this is the answer, but I seem to remember a
A&E special about the gay 'ball' culture in NY and then consequently around a number of entrenched gay enclaves of Atlanta, Chicago, etc. I do know that a lot of trends in NY come from this culture first and then are adopted by the trendy of the city. The following is a snippet from the wikipedia def. of Ball Culture. It is quite an interesting phenomenon, though it is often played down by the mainstream gay culture as too radical and extreme. Anyway, the term 'snap' is one that many gay members here will recall for many years now coming from the more flambouyant members of our community.

"Houses", also called "drag houses" or "drag families", are groups composed primarily of gay males and transgendered people, the majority of which are African American or Latino, banded together under a respected "house mother" (usually a drag queen or a transgender person) or even a "house father".<1><4>

The best known houses are New York City groups, especially those such as the House of Corey, the House of LaBeija, the House of Ninja, the House of Pendavis, the House of Garavani and House of Xtravaganza that were shown in the 1990 documentary film Paris Is Burning. Other houses function similarly in many United States but mainly focused in major cities on the East Coast, in the Midwest and South (i.e. House Of Infiniti , House of Mizrahi, House of Aviance, etc.)<2><5><6><7>

According to the Village Voice:

...houses are loose-knit, typically same sex, confederacies of "children" who adopt a family name, usually swiped from a fashion designer, and adhere to rules set up by a presiding "mother" and "father."

God what a creep to worry about the safety of his family, huh?

You would never object to having your own attempt to vote responded to in the newspapers with your home address plastered there for all to see. You love danger, right? You'd say Bring em on, publish my phone number too, huh?

Too bad we can't all be brave and wonderful like you.

Or are you just going to do a hit and run post as so many people like you are apt to do? Time Robbins was illegally denied his right to vote, and then had his personal information posted, and now he's mad. You wouldn't be? Is that what you're saying?

...or perhaps that was the issue?
Maybe this guy heard about his interview on Ed Schultz (and no doubt other media outlets), giving people tips on their right to vote?

It is completely unacceptable for that man to publish a "media letter" that included Tim's personal information and address. I would think it unacceptable if it was me...and I'm not an Oscar winner and well-known actor.

rightfully so.
I also saw him come back to his polling place with the court order.
Sadly, not everyone who is denied the right to vote has the knowledge or the ability to fight like he did.

The fact that that asshole published Mr. Robbins' personal info for public perusal is disgusting. I hope that
the guy will at least lose his job, be fined, and perhaps spend a couple of days in jail. I also hope that
there is some legal recourse that Mr. Robbins has. This guy, Soumas, is a grade-one moran, and deserves to pay
whatever price is legally available for his stupidity and his hubris.
