Pirates! Who would have thought we'd ever have problems with traditional pirates? |

The farce of the bush presidency ending with pirates seems about right.
It makes one remember a line from a Broadway musical A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum: One character in the musical is "Erronius, who is abroad searching for his long-lost children (stolen in infancy by pirates)." (Sung with emphisis on the word PIRATES!
In the 19th century, America took on the Barbary Coast Pirates at Tripoli and defeated them. (The Marine's Hymn immortalizes this victory.)
Now bush, who couldn't or wouldn't stop 15 guys with box-cutters finds piracy another part of his dismal legacy. What a wimp. Like father like son. And this is his strong suit.

1. I lost a friend at sea 20 years ago |

She was part of a crew sailing a yacht from a US tourist trap to Bermuda.
We all hoped it was a rogue wave and not pirates.
Piracy has existed in this hemisphere forever. These days, it's drug smugglers instead of peg legged guys with parrots on their shoulders, but it's still out there.

Wondering what it will take to get "oh, aren't pirates cute like Johnny Depp" out of people's minds.

3. Even the whole "democracy on high seas" angle proves to be a fraud |

Yes, the captain, cruising grounds and prize distribution were generally determined by a vote by the crew of the ship. Yes, the punishment dealt for transgressions was probably less severe than it would have been in the navies or merchant fleets of the time.
However, that "democracy" ended when the pirate ship captured a prize as the general choice offered to captives was limited to two options...join us or die. I'm sure the captives that were tortured and raped and somehow managed to survive until rescued or marooned would present quite a different picture from what those who like to see pirates as "sticking it to man" would like to believe.

4. I'm suprised we're hearing it in the news rather than there being pirates. |

Will Cheney use this to go into Malaysia?

5. Personally, I think Shrub is a pirate. As a member of Skull & Bones, |
|
he's successfully looted our treasury between the war and the bank bailout.
