8. Tariffs can bite us in the ass.
Edited on Tue Nov-18-08 07:44 PM by backscatter712
I'd say make our tariffs in parity with those from other nations. We don't want to go Smoot-Hawley and jack the import tariffs to insane levels - that will fuck the economy even worse.

I'd say probably the biggest thing to do is give companies tax breaks for hiring workers here in the U.S., and take the tax breaks away from companies that outsource/offshore work.

Remember that a big purpose of taxation (aside from raising revenue for the .gov) is to alter behavior (I know, behavior-altering taxes get the Rethugs screeching.) We want to alter behavior, not take so much money out of the economy that things get worse.

17. Giving work visas to foreign workers to come here is the same as offshoring.
Indian companies like TATA and SATYAM bring in their own workers from India on H-1b or even worse L level visas.
These companies are undermining our IT industry and even some of our accounting firms.

If a lot of companies are laying off employees by the thousands, why are we still importing workers by the thousands?

18. Good point. Time to rein in the H1-B abuse.
It's time for U.S. policy to reflect preference for U.S. citizens rather than offshored, outsourced, or in-sourced H1-B workers.

Put a U.S. citizen to work, you get a tax break. Prefer non-citizens or offshored workers? You pay.

12. Tariffs Won't Help Much
The most popular "Japanese" cars are made here.

Universal health care would help a lot.

So would the EFCA.

9. Gee why didn't you think of that a few decades ago?
Maybe our Corporations would not be in this shape...Maybe America would be a healthy nation instead of a complete and total mess.
