I just got off the phone with my girlfriend's 'pub sister. |
|
We are leaving in the morning for Cabo, thru Thanksgiving.
GF has quite a few Vacation Rental properties in S. Lake Tahoe ($500-$2K/night), and all those checks come in the mail.
We have (finally) lost the HouseMate/DramaQueen, and needed someone to pick up the mail and deposit the checks (times are tight, in case no one has noticed).
Since I have done countless favors (repairs, taking their ancient dog to the vet, all kinds of crap) for GF's sister and her disabled husband for a while (they have a ton of money, and I always lose money on "favors" done), I decided to call in a favor and ask her to pick up the mail and deposit the checks. They live less than a mile away, on the same hill.
BTW, we don't talk Politics. But they know how we feel, especially since GF is almost a dead ringer for Palin and things do come up.
So I asked her if she could pick up the checks and drop them in the bank, which is maybe a 1/4 mile from the house.
She said sure, but there would be a trip charge.
I asked her just how much that "trip charge" would be.
"One hundred dollars a day."
I said, "You must be kidding".
She replied, "It's about time you Liberals realize there is no free lunch".
For the first time in my life, I told a Woman to Go F**k Herself.

9. Repubs' entire arrogant self-important existence has been publicly repudiated. |

The woman's mad at the world so she's taking it out on you. She was rude. I'm glad you put it back in her face. It ain't your fault she bet on the wrong horse. If her husband's disabled, you'd think she'd have a clue about what a 'liberal' is.
I have a brother in law who has no health insurance so he had to collect Charity Care to pay for his wife's hospitalization. He also wants his mom to apply for Medicaid so he doesn't have to pay for her care. But he's a Republican and a Dittohead who can't stand liberals and Democrats. This is my definition of a loser. I'm sorry you had to deal with such ugliness on the part of your sister in law. She's a loser, too.

49. Yeah- I'm not crazy about Cabo myself. |
|
The most interesting thing about the place to me is the contrast between that one settlement and the rest of the peninsula. I rode a motorcycle from San Diego to Cabo San Lucas a couple of years ago, and it's really eye-opening. Most of Baja feels almost old world. Extremely poor, of course-- but isolated, too. Then you drive into Cabo and it's like you're entering an American city. Everything's supersized and manicured.

That was my first thought as well. Make it formal - which will either be greeted with "its all a joke" or a more formal aspect to the relationship (which she has already introduced) - present a "bill" at the same rate that she states ($100 a day) per specific favirs already delivered - with a note that says something to the effect that repubicans need to learn that the free lunch based on expecting other people to do things for them out of "the niceness of the heart" is over and just as republicans state - there is a cost - and state a cost. Then allow a "debt cancellation" per new services rendered per collecting and making bank deposits for the week you will be gone. Try to do so in a way that ignores the obnoxiousness in her response to you (as to just straight call it out will lead to never trading favors in the future) and puts it into a "playful" tone. Respond in a way that presumes that she is "making a joke" (even if you know she is not) and put her into the position to either back away from her stand (as in "it was all a joke") or really live with the consequences of being charged for "favors" in the same way she is snidely stating that you should pay her.
Calling folks out in this way (presuming/or acting as if it is a joke) will more often back folks down from their ridiculousness than calling them out directly and living with the consequence of on going strife and drama in the future. It gives space for folks to do a "doover" and allow future relations to be less strained in the future. Then if the person continues to be an a-hole, it is clear that they are willing to live with the stress/alienation of the relationship. Start with a light hearted "debts due (per her $100 a week due per the favor) for recent "favors" that you have done for them (presuming that there have been some) and a shout out to "debt relief" being available by providing the "service"/favor initially requested (picking up the checks and depositing them.)
If the response is hostile - then it is clear that she/they have decided to take on a hostile/oppositional relationship. Then react accordingly.
How to respond really depends upon whether or not one wants to take a chance at salvaging the relationship or not.

I have a sister like that. She wouldn't ask for money like that, I don't think. She would make an excuse not to do it. Glad she lives two states away so I don't have to find out.
But she's done other things like that. Real christian type she is.

44. Yes. You really have to bounce this off your girlfriend about her sister. |
|
I'd never think about getting in between my wife and her sister.
Personally, I would have suggested you reply with, "I'll have to ask your sister about the charge."
IMO, resolving this thing will depend upon the relationship the sisters have and what your girlfriend has to say about it.
