Giving Up on God

By Kathleen Parker
Tuesday, November 18, 2008; 6:37 PM

... Armband religion is killing the Republican Party. And, the truth -- as long as we're setting ourselves free -- is that if one were to eavesdrop on private conversations among the party intelligentsia, one would hear precisely that.

The choir has become absurdly off-key, and many Republicans know it.

But they need those votes!

So it has been for the Grand Old Party since the 1980s or so, as it has become increasingly beholden to an element that used to be relegated to wooden crates on street corners.

Short break as writer ties blindfold and smokes her last cigarette.

Which is to say, the GOP has surrendered its high ground to its lowest brows. In the process, the party has alienated its non-base constituents, including other people of faith (those who prefer a more private approach to worship), as well as secularists and conservative-leaning Democrats who otherwise might be tempted to cross the aisle.

Here's the deal, 'pubbies: Howard Dean was right.

1. A lesson for religion? Don't hitch your wagon to a lame horse?
This article shows the danger of religion supporting a political party. God is now "blamed" for the party's failures. Of course I'll be the first to blame false "christians." I don't care which of the "christian" denominations they belong to, if your false religion supported bush, I blame YOU for this economic catastrophe.

Get the axes, I hear churches make nice firewood!

But, blame God? Heck no. If those false "christians" had actually followed God, we wouldn't be in this mess. Shout it from the mountain top: false "christians" who supported bush caused this!

2. I have to agree with her basic premise that the GOP is in deep trouble because it put all its stock

in wooing right-wing Christians, who have no interest in compromising because they believe they are of the party of God. This is going to make it very difficult for them to create a big tent. RW Christians aren't interested in sharing their tent with just anybody.

4. That's how the "Rs" lost my mother.
Actually, I was registered as an Independent for most of my voting life but was driven by various nutcases to reregister and vote a straight Democratic ticket.

6. She's brave, she's going to get a LOT of hate mail. I emailed her to express my
support for her truth-telling. It would be nice to have a sane opposition party instead of the Holy roller nutjob party.

8. I was thinking that it might be nice to send her letters of support.
Gods and goddesses know, she'll be getting a lot of the opposite.

9. so now it's all the rage to dump their religion when it's no longer convenient?
I would have more admiration for this woman if she had done this 3 years ago when the religious right was running rampant through our politics with their rapture fear bomb them all bullshit.

now, NOW, she comes out. it's like rooting for a team AFTER they won the world series.

10. So the Greed wing and the Fundie wing are a-feudin'?
Aw, that's too bad. Just think, if they split, Dems will have an even greater majority.
