Pale little girls all over the world would look to Palin as a role model if she stopped the tanning.

Double standards - black woman changing the texture of her hair is suspect for racial identity issues.

White woman can curl, tan, plump lips, straighten without carrying any racial burden.

Although I think that OP was causing trouble -- it was hit-and-run.

3. Yeah. And if Michelle has a $70,000 hair-straightening bed installed in the White House at
at taxpayer expense under the guise of having some "rewiring" done, I think we should all get really, really upset. But not until then.

5. Seeing what you want go all Holy Grail is a nightmare to many women
As a kid, I was blond haired, and blue eyed, and perpetually tanned because I lived within a bicycle ride to the beach virtually all of my life (though I don't partake as much as I used to). I remember a bunch of cousins who had far more American Indian blood than the few drops I have, who looked incredibly naturally beautiful to me. Sleek shiny black hair, high cheekbones, smooth olive skin... come to find out, they were jealous of my more Celtic look. When we fessed up to each other as adults, there was a profound saddness... we had wasted so much time and energy wishing we were more like the other.

Now that I've hit the half-century mark (as my middle kid is so fond of saying), I feel we really do need someone to grow old gracefully and show us how to do it. Without surgery and without trowel-applied makeup! I worked for eight years in Century City, near Beverly Hills, and I've never seen anything more heinously scary than "Scary Beverly Hills Ladies"... yes, I've assigned them a moniker;) There is nothing pretty about a 70 year old woman dressed like a cheerleader... I am NOT exaggerating. Yes, you are nice and trim and your new boobs are as taught as a 20 year old's, but your eyes are on your forehead and your hands, if they didn't have bright red nail polish, look just like my grandmother's. Please. Please Goddess Inanna, or whomever holds my fate, don't ever, ever let me hallucinate like that! Never allow me to even think a bit of surgery might be a good thing!

who chose to have a face lift when i was 50. i'm very careful with makeup -- some mascara and a little blush. i do not look like a beverly hills lady -- i look like myself minus the bags under the eyes and the sagging skin.

my nails have a french manicure.

25. I have someone for you: Jamie Lee Curtis
Jamie Lee Curtis is in her late forties and gray. She posed for "More" magazine recently without makeup. The photo of her is included in the following:

http://www.more.com/more-women/celebrities/jamie-lee-curtis-on-growing-older-wiser/

I think she is still gorgeous. However, there's an entire industry (and millions of men,) who won't even talk to a woman over 40, let alone consider them for a possible romantic partner. This is IMHO, YMMV, and from both media and personal observation.

26. It's sad, isn't it.. men look "distinguished", "rugged"
Edited on Wed Nov-19-08 05:32 PM by SoCalDem
and older women just look .."tired", "haggard"..

I quit with the make up & "stuff" a long time ago.. I am 59..and I earned every gray hair & wrinkle..

I remind my husband that it must be HIS fault..because when I met him, I was 19, and everything ON me was "perky" & new & in its "proper" place.. So if things have sagged, stretched, plumped, grayed, thinnned..it MUST be HIS fault..It was all just FINE, before I hooked up with him:)

16. Actually I've heard that said about women (not Palin or Obama)
I've been told that I set a bad example by 1. shaving my legs and underarms, 2. taking my husband's last name. Hmm there must be other things I've done wrong too but those are the two that this reminds me of.

Anyway, it isn't her job or anyone's to make choices based on what everyone else wants, and it is no one's responsibility to be politically perfect - and perfection doesn't exist anyway.

10. Speaking of Sarah Palin's hair--Joy Behar and "Lizzie" had a discussion on day about
how most all repug women are blond, and she pointed out that if SP was elected, SP would go blond. I kept hoping she'd bring it up again when, as I noticed that as the campaign went on, Palin's highlights did appear to get lighter and more plentiful.

I gave up watching the View, though. "Lizzie" and Sherrie are two sides of stupid I can do without. Also, I hate the way Lizzie won't shut up, and neither Joy nor Whoopie ever follow through enough to shut her up. She always has to have the last stupid, whining, Obama-bashing word.

12. I think some of this comes from a well intentioned
but a bit odd Salon piece.

First lady got back
I'm a black woman who never thought I'd see a powerful, beautiful female with a body like mine in the White House. Then I saw Michelle Obama -- and her booty!
