House Democratic Steering Committee approves Waxman over Dingell.
By Satyam Khanna at 2:05 pm

The House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee voted 25-22 earlier today to recommend House Oversight Committee Chairman Henry Waxman (D-CA) take over as chairmanship of the Energy and Commerce Committee from Rep. John Dingell (D-MI). A final decision “will most likely be made by the full Democratic Caucus Thursday,” according to CongressDaily. As the Wonk Room’s Brad Johnson noted, Dingell was supported by the oil and coal industries. Backers of the pollution industry raised fears that Waxman would be “scary” for polluters.

3. Sorry, not a fan of the switch
Waxman is more supportive of restrictive gun-control measures than Dingell, an NRA member.

Not liking where this is headed in two years...

4. Being approved by the steering committee means what?
How often has the full Democratic Caucus run afoul of steering committee recommendations.

I ask because the Blue Dog Caucus has already said they favor having dirty polluting Dingell remaining in the position.

9. This is my thinking too!
I think Obama is really going to be able to do some real work toward fuel efficient cars and slowing global warming (http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=4487949&mesg_id=4489483)

17. I think you are right.
I am sure he's got a plan or is putting the final touches on it. He has stated that he is in favor or helping the auto industry but with conditions. I am sure that cafe standards are just the beginning of those conditions.

10. Dingell fought for union workers, not pollution
He's fought for decades upon decades, and the first thing Dems do is throw him under the bus.

Waxman and people like him want Detroit to do things that aren't possible for us right now, like asking a bedridden patient to run a marathon.

At the beginning of every Congress, Dingell introduces a bill providing for a national health insurance system, the same bill that his father proposed while he was in Congress.

13. Good news.
Dingell has been aiding and abetting the same problems that now have the big 3 automakers in WDC, hands out for cash.
