SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Boeing Co. said Wednesday it will cut about 800 positions at its integrated defense systems facility in Wichita, Kan. in 2009. The layoffs will affect managers and salaried and hourly workers. Boeing will send out layoff notices to about 76 employees on Friday. Their last day of work is scheduled for mid-January, according to Boeing. The remainder of the layoff notices will be delivered next year, most of it in the first half of the year. The reduction is partly due to the delay in the U.S. Air Force tanker-replacement program. In addition to staff reduction, the company will also restructure its business to lower rates and become "more affordable for customers." Boeing Wichita employs about 3,000 people.
