Good wages built America and can re-build it |
|
Why is it, that when things get bad, the FIRST (and usually only) thing suggested by the right is a reduction in wages and benefits for working people?
We've been cutting wages and benefits for decades now. Has it brought us prosperity? No. That's because prosperity is built on high wages and good benefits earned by people who work for a living.
I think we have seen already the folly of trying to grow the economy by stripping the wealth of the people in the middle. If we "Mexicanize" our economy (the dream of the far right) then who will buy all the goods and services the corporations want to sell?
We need to run the country for the benefit of those in the middle. That will help the rich (which sell to the middle class) and the poor (who need jobs in dry cleaning shops, retail stores, fast-food places, etc.)
Nothing else works. When the middle class does well, America does well. When the middle class is hurting, America does poorly.
Just sayin'.

1. It's More Than Wages, It's Also Opportunity |
|
There are literally no jobs of any kind, at any wage in my part of this nation. Official unemployment crossed 9%, the REAL unemployment is anybody's guess. A lot of people have left, or moved in with relatives or friends.
Sure, you can get great bonuses if you sign up for cannon fodder, and they don't screw your widow out of it. That's no way to build a country.

Not the answer to our countries woes. I happen to be working class so I imagine my opinion is not considered important to the corporatist types. The truth is that a strong middle class equals a strong economy even if the corporatists disagree.

certainly helped little ol' Japan build the second biggest economy in the world. And that was thanks to MacArthur!
It's difficult to avoid the conclusion that he did that to punish the Shogun class for their insane militarism leading to the war. But, boy, did it ever help the people and the country! I wonder if it just could be that our leaders are due for a good caning!

Of course, if one economy goes down, it looks like all the others follow suit.

6. I agree, if everyone made twice as much at their job |

then everyone would have twice as much to spend. That's good because companies will need to make twice as much money to pay their workers.
