Why would Hillary want to be Secretary of State?
Seriously.

Hillary probably would have a great chance to become majority leader is she stayed in the Senate. And that job would give her a lot of power over the domestic issues (which she seems to care about most), as well as some say-so over foreign policy.

As a Democrat, I'd rather have Bill Richardson running the State Department and Hillary in a leadership role in the Senate. Anybody else?

1. It's a toss up between the two.
Hillary is a very good diplomat and she has a big pair of balls. Her marriage to Bill made her tough. Richardson is smart but I am not sure he is tough.

2. Why? because it's a very important position and has a lot of responsibility

Why do you think she would be a cinch for Senate Majority Leader? I was surprised during the campaign at how many of her collegues endorsed Obama over her, given that HRC had been in the Senate since 2001 and Obama since 2005.

7.  No . Because it concerns stuff that should be private. Suffice it to say many folks in NM
and in the Party are aware and love to gossip about it.

4. Hillary is next in line AFTER Chuck Schumer
People often forget that she's the JUNIOR Senator from NY.

On the other hand, she might stay IF she gets some significant improvement in her status. Schumer would probably be okay with it, since he's in a comfy spot of his own. But he obviously wants to keep his seniority in the Senate.

Between the SOS offer and Teddy's offer of a job in health care reform, this is obviously part of an effort to advance her. In spite of the wails of online Hillary-hate, she is a formidable politician and Democrat, probably capable of muscling through more change in this era than even Bill could while he was President. Working under the direction of Barack Obama is about as good a deal as we've had since some of FDR's choices.

Richardson is too mellow to be an ideal rebuilder of American reputation in the post-Bush era. It's going to take a pushy, enthusiastic go-getter, a barnstormer, and Hillary fits that description. But Richardson would excel in reforming and modernizing bureaucracies. As an operations wonk, he is an Admiral in a town of swabbies. The man has a magic touch in management and in-house diplomacy, and I think Obama is going to place him in that kind of position.

6. I don't think she wants to be SoS that bad
but Billy Bob wants her to have the job for his own ego satisfaction.

10. I think it's wonderful how Bill tells you what he's thinking and feeling.

9. That's What I Keep Thinking
It seems she'd be bigger heat as the multi-term Senator from the 2nd biggest state. And, she could probably keep that job for the rest of her life.

11. i don't know about richardson--especially from what saracat said
upthread, but i think hillary should stay in the senate. sos--what would she do in 4 years? i think she'd have more power for a longer period of time in the senate. sos seems like a flash in the pan--they're there and then they are gone. i want hillary to stick around for awhile.

12. If I were Hillary, I'd prefer to stay in the Senate.
As far as Richardson, I'm not a big fan of his.

14. It's not like she'd be the first woman in that job
And it's not like she does not already have a good job. Hillary might actually be a good secretary of state. But I just don't see why she'd give up her Senate seat in order to take the job.
