"Democrat Party" What's our response?
Why not begin a push - right here at DU - to formulate a comeback at the truncating of Democratic Party to Democrat Party?

Let's throw out suggestions and I'll start a poll later on several of the better suggestions. Please remember, something like repigs, repugnants, etc. may fit but won't ever get mainstream usage.

A few I've heard...'

Publican party.

Repub party.

Republicrat party.

Please throw one in! Thanks.

And please kick and rec this!

It's usually done as an attempt to enrage and/or engage, and I never accept the offer.

5. I think all Democrats and people of intelligence should just
make sure they always use the word Democratic correctly and let the morans who insist on using Democrat as an adjective continue to expose themselves as the ignoramuses they are.

26. Here's what I wrote to my local public radio station when they used "Democrat party"
I listened with interest to your fascinating report on campaign donations made by residents of Indiana to presidential candidates. I must note, however, that the name of the Democratic Party is indeed the "Democratic" Party, and not the "Democrat" Party as you stated it. Obviously, a person can be a "Democrat," but the "-ic" ending really is required when referring to the political party. The American Heritage Collegiate Dictionary agrees.

As noted in this Wikipedia article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Democrat_party), the phrase "Democrat Party" is a political epithet and in most instances is used an an intentionally derisive slur. As you can see in the Notes and References sections, much has been written about the use of the phrase. I highly recommend this New Yorker article: http://www.newyorker.com/archive/2006/08/07/060807ta_talk_hertzberg. You will note that even William F. Buckley, Jr. voiced his opposition to the use of the word "Democrat" as an adjective, saying that the job of journalists and writers is "to get the correct meaning transmitted without contorting the language."

I'm sure that I will be the only curmudgeon to register a complaint, but this is the first time I've heard the phrase used by a non-partisan source. I would not be surprised to hear the phrase on your station were it coming from a Republican (or is it "Republic"?) politician, but I was indeed surprised to hear it from a local reporter.

Thanks.

The reporter replied with an apology and said it was sloppy copy editing. He also said that he's amazed by the number of area Democratic politicians who say "Democrat party." He's right. I've heard it from them, too and will correct them too if I hear it again.
