39. Weird evening tonight.

Went out to Wal-Mart to pick up a couple things for deer season this weekend. Anyhow, there was a Wall-E promo with the DVD by the register, so I grabbed one.

So I plop my three items down at the register, and the cashier starts asking me about deer season blah blah. I paid her, walked out. Driving out of the parking lot, I was thinking, there's no way all that stuff only cost 16 bucks. She didn't scan the DVD, but yet she disarmed it! She freaking gave me a DVD for free! It was almost as if she struck up the conversation to keep me from paying attention to what was going on. My first thought was to go back in and pay for it, but then I probably would've gotten her in trouble. I used to work at Lowe's a few years back and they busted a cashier doing that for some of her friends. It wasn't pretty when the cops came.

So, I went to Pizza Hut right after. I'm sitting there enjoying my pizza and in walks the oddest couple I've seen. It was this Amish-Mennonite looking guy (there's tons around here, great people btw). He had a beard that would put Ulysses S. Grant to shame. Full sideburns, full bushy neck hair, the thing must've been a very bushy foot long. Complete with a ten-gallon cowboy hat that he never took off for the entire meal and overalls. I was looking at him thinking, 'I had no idea there were Amish Texas Rangers.' He actually looked really cool. His wife was like completely the opposite. Cosmopolitan hottie, petite, hair pulled back tight with the smart Tina Fey glasses on, very stylish dress. It was just plain bizarre. It was also oddly comforting, they looked very happy with their toddler in the high chair.

I dunno. Just had to share. Gonna watch my free DVD in a little bit.

I used to be (before I went all Lester Burnham) the administrative assistant for the SVP of HR and I saw all the perks the company officers got including cars. The CEO had a town car AND a driver that the company paid for. The typical annual bonus for regular employees was about 10% of their yearly salary; for officers, it was upwards of 50% and the CEO's was %117 of his yearly salary. And, much of the work my boss generated for me was not related to company business either and from talking to other administrative assistants on the floor, it was the same for them as well.

The school is $20 mil short, 160-220 teachers are on the chopping block, and the 2 schools that my boys attend are on a list for potential closing. Charlie told me last night that MTSU is losing millions in funding.

81. True poultry story.

Back in the 1990's, I spent a couple summers working in the Middle East. Anyhow, one of the towns (it was a real Sally Struther's kind of place) we were staying in, had a chicken shop.

You went in, picked out your live chickens from the coops they were in, and they did the entire process of getting them into raw quarters right in front of you.

So the first time I went in, I was fascinated to be able to pick out my live chickens. I picked two out, the guy working there took them to a large sink, slit their throats to bleed them.

Then he threw them into a machine that looked something like this, although it was much more crude and looked like it had a couple hundred thousand 'chicken miles' on it.



He closed the lid, flipped the switch, and whammo! Those chickens started whirring around in there at probably 300 rpm!. About 20 seconds later, he turned the machine off, pulled out two naked chickens! I had never seen such a device. He then gutted and quartered the chickens, tied them up in a plastic sack. Those chickens hit the oven still warm from life hehe.

Anyhow, the next day, went in to get two more chickens. This time he didn't bother bleeding them, he just tossed them in the machine alive and flipped the switch. I started laughing my ass off for some reason and he smiled and gave me a thumbs up.

That place averaged around 105-110 degrees in the daytime, and lemme tell ya, it stunk horribly.
