Does anyone in the turkey slaughter biz know what the dude was doing to the turkey
during the Palin interview. I saw the blurred out video and couldn't figure out what they were doing to the turkeys that were put into the metal thing head first.

my only guess was that the machine was sucking the blood out.

Palin is a freak, a sideshow in a carnival.

1. He was cutting off hits head, and letting its heart pump out the blood.
Edited on Fri Nov-21-08 08:34 AM by TexasObserver
When he cut off the head, the body would convulse, so he would put his hand on its butt and press it down, forcing the action into the cone, designed to facilitate the bleeding.

When an animial is butchered, it is bled, using its own heart and gravity to pump the blood out.

13. Shh! Don't tell them that supermarket birds are not raised in shrink wrapping!

I am still not crazy about the process (we now have our own chickens to kill now and then, and I do not love it!), but let's not pretend it is not where our meat comes from!

From what I have seen, the guy on video is actually pretty reasonable about it- he isn't trying to kill 20 of them a minute anyway...

16. I eat meat, with no regret, though I think the US consumes way too much of it.
And I think people are entirely too far removed from the meat-production process.

How did people think the turkeys are killed? Lethal injection?

7. Have you ever notice her clenched fists? If she's not using her hands, they are clenched.
Sometimes she gestures with one hand clenched as though she were holding a pointer or ruler or somesuch other object. Makes me wonder how she controled/controls her kids.

14. And all the while she harped about taking a break to do that 'fun' thing
And how she loves supporting small businesses like that one. I'm surprised no one mentioned the bizarreness of it all. It really is like a carnival show from the Twilight Zone. It reminded me of the movie Jacob's Ladder.

Is that while we were watching turkeys being slaughtered she was talking about how it was so nice to be doing something that was 'fun'. Obviously she was talking about the pardoning part, not the slaughter. It was bizarre.

I also think the turkey she pardoned is already slaughtered. It was all just a rather rudely stupid 'fun' exercise in propaganda for public consumption, only it was carried out by someone who is a snaggle-toothed knuckle dragger behind the camera. Or, on the other hand, maybe it was carried out by someone who really hates Palin. In that case it was a smart person who knew the world would be watching. And judging.

15. I blew up a piece of the video......I believe the head is still there
and I believe what that guy was doing was pulling the neck back.

Looks to me that the turkey's beak is in the open position and its throat is cut.

My mom and grandma always told me they cut heads too. I just found it curious as to why he kept his hand at the bottom end if he was only decapitating.

20. They do not cut the head off. They need the brain to tell the heart to keep pumping.
The hand at the bottom twists the head so that the veins on the back of its head stay open so the blood can drain from the body.

24. My grandmother cut the heads off of chickens, ducks and turkeys years ago.
My mother helped out sometimes. And many of them would be running around after their head was gone.

22. I've done it that way with cones with chickens
Years ago we had a bunch of chickens to slaughter and clean. A neighbor had the same situation so we got together and did about 100 of then one evening. He got us the use of a place that was set up for them and also had a plucker. You gotta love a plucker. Anyway you stick them down though the cones and their heads hang out the bottom. You cut their head off and they are held by the cone as they bleed out. Then you toss them into a vat of very hot water for a minute to loosen the feathers. After that you pull the feathers and after that you gut them. It takes longer for them to bleed out than any other part of the operation.

23. The cones prevent bruising by containing the chicken or
turkey and in the case of turkeys help to prevent injury to the human.

26. When I was in the Navy in Spain my friend and I were sitting up
on the roof of our apartment drinking some wine and watching the sun set. Suddenly our Spanish neighbor came out with a rabbit and calmly hung it upside down, pulled down on it's ears and cut it's throat. It was the last thing we were expecting to happen. We were pretty high at the time and it was pretty gruesome and so unexpected all we could do was laugh.
