Why doesn't George W Bush just resign and get the hell out of town??
And let Barack Obama take over the job immediately? Why don't the responsible Republicans, if there are any left, ask him to leave? To his final day in office, he is intent on causing as much pain and destruction as he possibly can. With the present condition of our economy and the dire situation with our Big Three auto makers, two months can be a very long time.

All the while, George W Bush seems to be oblivious to it all. He tells us that it is not a failure of capitalism - it is a failure of assholes like George W Bush. Everyday, he is doing all he can do to overturn any environmental oversight and any laws that might prohibit his business friends from having a free pass to do whatever their greedy hearts desire.

With each passing day, we cling more tightly to hope that we can make it just eight more weeks. Surely he cannot destroy the entire country in that short of a time? Right?

2. Because he still has Pardons to sign.
He's probably negotiating prices now for them to raise money for his "Presidential library". Those coloring books aren't free.

4. It would be nice. But the Constitution would get in the way
Presidential succession.. Obama is no where on that list... Would it not be Cheney , Condi.. Robert Byrd.?... Cheney might like that . Any doubt his pardoning powers would be the mark of his Administration..

10. It would be Cheney, Nancy Pelosi, Robert Byrd, Condi, Bill Gates and Paulson.
The thought of Cheney or Paulson make me totally ill.

I think that we could survive a few weeks of Condi or Gates, especially if they check in with Barack twice a day.

Of course Nancy or Ol' Robert would be great!

6. Because * has failed and ultimately quit everything he's ever done in his worthless life...
This would only exacerbate and distance himself further from his father as his lifelong struggle to win acceptance and approval from his father.

12. At this moment the line of succession runs through Cheney & Pelosi
I don't think he can just bypass them. About the most he can do is what he did today by sending Wall St. a sign of hope.

13. Seriously
the long time interval between the election and the inauguration is archaic and should no longer be needed. I guess two hundred years ago the members of the Electoral college had to ride their horses across the country to assemble and vote in the new president, and then the new president himself had to ride his horse to the capital, which all took time, but this is surely a tradition that could be dropped in this modern age. In the UK I think the new Prime Minister takes office pretty much the *day* after the election. Obviously this change would need a Constitutional Amendment, but why would anyone object to shortening the lame-duck period in which nothing productive gets done?

17. Can he be impeached for abdication of duty?
because that is clearly what is going on now. He is just hanging around to make sure the treasury is looted and that he can sign his pardons of torturers and thieves.

Each passing day emphasizes what a complete failure conservative policies and their standard-bearer * are. Let him stay and enjoy the evidence of TOTAL FAILURE. There's no way in hell to pin this on the Dems or their future president. W has more than exceeded our expectations of his failure, may it haunt him for the rest of his days.

20. Because we'd get Dick Cheney instead.
I'd go for it if Cheney resigns too. Then we'd get Nancy Pelosi, not a great choice but at least the worst she could do is to do nothing until Obama can take over.

21. The answer is in your OP."he is intent on causing as much pain and destruction as he possibly can."
I'm sure he's aware of just how unpopular he is by now. The election was a referendum in the republican party and they had the taste slapped right out of their mouths. He is going to stay no matter what because it pisses you off. You WANT him to go, so he will stay just to show, yet again, that you can't do anything to him. He has power and he knows it. You don't, and he knows THAT too.
