Edited on Fri Nov-21-08 11:35 PM by defendandprotect
Schultz was pushing an auto bail out very aggresively the other day --

permitting no "but's" about it but was forced to back down 2nd day --

Coomsby is a right-wing nut ...

No prfetense anymore ....

1. I like Hartmann, hes very intelligent
Stephanie Miller makes me laugh in the morning, but I only listen to her on the way to school. Randi Rhodes isn't bad but by 3pm I am so inundated with breaking news, the things she talks about are old to me.

35. Right. Heck, Ed Schulz was never actually AAR, himelf
which made the OP rather odd.

AAR was, and is, the best-known public entity. Since they are perpetually underfunded and incapable of making a commercial splash comparable to their high-powered conservo rivals you sort of have to seek them out, but their broadcast lineup is plenty solid today.

Obviously Rachel Maddow's their best-known personality (and I hope she keeps her show on AAR, although I'm sure she's hearing offers from others to jump when her contract's up) but following her is Ron Reagan, who does a terrific job.

And anyone missing out on Thom Hartmann's noon-3 slot (Al Franken's old territory) simply isn't paying attention to liberal radio.

during the primary and didn't fire Randi Rhodes, then maybe they'd be doing a bit better

I lost all respect for AA after that

my local radio station runs both AA and NovaM (or whatever its' called) so I get both

10. Thom Hartmann is the absolute best. No one can match him.
He is head and shoulders above the rest. He really knows what he is talking about.

Actually, I like Ed Schultz. Stephanie is fun Randi Rhodes is passionate. I also like Mike Malloy.

But I was terribly disappointed because this afternoon KTLK in L.A. broadcast a football game. We have one station for liberal radio (other than listener funded radio which is very mixed in quality) and PBS which is non-stop pablum as far as I am concerned, and they do all these paid ads on the weekends and sports for money. They need a sales rep in their ad department who understands the community that listens to their station and will raise advertising revenue for them so that they don't have to broadcast programs that their core listeners do not want to hear.

Community Radio is done by the listeners, and is usually far to the left. In my own Tampa, there is WMNF (88.5 fm) Also look up WFMU (Hoboken) and WWOZ (New orleans) all of whom have net pages and streaming audio.

13. Radio is a largely outdated medium of communication
Liberals don't need radio because we have are light years ahead of conservatives in our ability to use the Internet. Let the right wingers have radio. The longer they take to wean themselves off of it, the more elections they will lose.

We really do not want to "give" them anything, especially since Radio has been effective in swaying minds since the outset. Admittedly, the fascists have an advantage: Marconi himself used it to help Mussolini win. But we can also use it to summon forth the Garrison Keliors that will do as much as ten internet pages would.

15. It helped Mussolini win in the 1920's
When there was no television and there was no internet. But it's not the 1920's anymore, it's 2008 and radio is simply not the predominant way of reaching voters anymore and has not been for quite some time. Internet is the future, television is the present, and radio is the past. Lets let the Republicans live in the past while we move forward.

18. Quite right.
Fight on every front using whatever means available.

Few may know it, but the Obama victory was won by never conceding any one medium while launching offensives in media that the opposition never even thought about. Not only Facebook and such. He even leased a channel on Dish Network and ran ads on CNN and the rest with a "click-for-more-info" link to that channel that brought some (who knows how many or few) to view his message, bio and so on.

There is a tendency among some armchair or couch generals to claim that their uninformed opinion that one arena is best also means that they should argue that all others suck and should be abandoned. Delusional -- in the kindest interpretation.

You know the one, the Wednesday before the election, that everybody raved about? The one that ad better ratings than the final World Series game? It was on that outdated, ready for the cemetery Television.

Is anybody demanding money from you to invest in Liberal talk radio? If others wish to invest in it, then what's your problem? How is that a shirt off your back?

46. Television is still the dominant medium
And in politics it doesn't matter how good you are with radio or internet it doesn't mean jack shit if you aren't good with television. So I'm not really saying the internet is the only thing but I am saying that it is the way of the future and broadcast radio is the way of the past.

I don't really have a problem with others investing in liberal talk radio but it's just something I don't understand. Maybe it's because I don't drive all that much and don't listen to radio frequently.

47. Well it is a for profit medium.
So as long as it's profitable for Hartmann, Rhodes et al. continue to make a living out of it, then you shouldn't try to put them out of work.

I'm just not getting your argument against it. It's as if you believe that it's all campaign funds paying for it, and that it's just a sink hole, as if we don't have enough diversity in the Democratic Party for people to use their talents and money where it best suits them. There's more than enough talent and money for everywhere, especially in a for profit medium like AM talk radio, that receives absolutely no campaign money.

27. The 1994 Gingrich" revolution was due to RW talk radio.
Those wins back then were mainly because of a constant drum of lies about Bill Clinton and cheerleading for the GOP that led to their takeover and our nation's destruction. That's a little later than the 1920s. Gingrich went so far as to make Rush Limbaugh an honorary Congress critter for his efforts.

Who knows how much credit 2006 & 2008 can be given to liberal radio, since it only became widespread in 2004, but I wouldn't dismiss it's impact.

It's another channel for our message. Besides, every one of these shows offers podcasts, and that's better than live streaming (no commercials, and no static from weak am signals).

41. Again, that was 1994
The internet as a political tool did not really take off until Web 2.0 and Howard Dean (2003-2004). YouTube's emergence in 2006 was another big turning point. YouTube, as far as I'm concerned, had far more to do with our victories in 2006 and 2008 than liberal radio did. And not just because of things like the "Macaca" video although that was part of it. The internet allowed Obama to take his message directly to the people in a way that no other candidate had really done before. No filtering through talk radio or television pundits. You simply click a button on YouTube and hear Barack Obama speak. That is the way of the future for progressives.

The other thing that you have to realize is that Limbaugh is as much of a blessing as a curse over the GOP. Limbaugh hated McCain and wasn't going to drum up support among his minions to go volunteer for the campaign until McCain picked Palin. As a result McCain had a completely incompetent VP who turned off a large segment of the middle. If McCain had half of Obama's internet savvy he could've drummed up his own grassroots instead of having to pander to Limbaugh to do it for him.

Republicans have an organizing model where their foot soldiers come from Limbaugh and the Fundie Churches. In order to get those foot soldiers they have to pander to Limbaugh and those Fundie Churches. We just saw Barack Obama create a model where he amassed an even better army of foot soldiers by appealing directly to the people largely using the internet. Obama didn't have to pander to anybody to get his volunteers. So what I can't understand is why in god's name people are so gung ho about adopting the Republican model when Obama just showed us there is a much better way to do it.

43. You're an eggs in one basket kind of guy, aren't you?
That's fine, but if at least 3 people who happened to drop into this thread, in this website, on these two days, disagree with you, then how many more millions do as well? Now take that, and factor in those liberals and Democratic leaning people, and others who are open to our ideas, who use the internet for shopping, playing games and porn, and never think twice about talking, much less reading politics here on Web 2.0., who might not vote for somebody they never heard of, or donate money to them either. How are you going to reach them? 28% still FEAR Obama, because they haven't seen the You Tube ads, read DKos/Media Matters, or gone to Obama's fight the smears site, and STILL believe that he's a communist muslim who's the anti-christ.

Hint... Every one of them has a radio in their cars.

I'm not discounting what a powerful tool we're taking advantage of (the tubes), but to dismiss all avenues to get our message out, and that includes lowly am radio, is the equivalent of the DNC's pre- Howard Dean 50 state strategy, where we only focused on a few winnable states and big battlegrounds.

Saturation wins elections, not secret handshakes and memberships to You Tube. Nobody is "adopting" the Republican model of talk radio. Liberals started it with Alan Berg in Denver, who got assassinated in the early 80s before Limbaugh.

And... The You Tube videos, while effective, were nothing to the hundreds of thousands of us who knocked on millions of doors. Yeah, the net was great at getting volunteers, but so was the good old phone and flyer at the Safeway entrance.

23. I don't think liberal radio will ever succeed.
Republicans get more into the "group think" and bloc voting thing more than liberals.

When conservatives state the "official position" on any of 100's of topics, other conservatives fall in line.

That's also why there is so much debate on this site, we all have our own opinions on each of 100's of issues AND we all want our say.

It's just not an attitude that is conducive to the one-way "here's my opinion" radio format.

At least the only ones worth listening to. They fired Sam Seder, who was my favorite for that bridge troll Lionel (Buy me a Cinnabon to cross the bridge, Precious!).

Since Al Franken quit, it's gone downhill real quick. Milke Malloy was fired, Randi quit. Both of those went to NovaM, which Malloy co-founded. Hopefully NovaM will hire Seder and renew his show. They used to have him on as a fill in for vacation days.

38. Large cities may have alternative community radio stations
Portland has KBOO-FM, which offers left-wing talk from 7:30-9:00AM every weekday with a different host every day. When I lived there, I especially liked Joe Uris and Barbara Bernstein.

In Minneapolis, KFAI-FM is more oriented towards non-commercial music and ethnic programming, but it does have left-leaning talk scattered around the schedule, as well as Democracy Now.

and I am sure he did his work this past cycle. He moves far righters a bit more to the center and center people to left of center. He does a good job reaching out to the plains.

Otherwise I am spoiled with Minnesota Public Radio (KNOW 91.1) and usually have that on when I do not have my rock music station on (93X (KXXR FM) in Mpls/St Paul).
