Bob Jones U. Apologizes For Racism
S.C. School Says Culture Rather Than Biblical Teachings Led To Institutional Racist Policies

COLUMBIA, S.C., Nov. 21, 2008

(CBS/AP) Bob Jones University is apologizing for racist policies that included a one-time ban on interracial dating and its unwillingness to admit black students until 1971.

In a statement posted Thursday on its Web site, the fundamentalist Christian school founded in 1927 in northwestern South Carolina says its rules on race were shaped by culture instead of the Bible.

The university says president Stephen Jones decided to issue the apology because he still receives questions about the school's views on race.

In the statement, BJU said that it was founded to help young men and women cultivate a Biblical worldview, and to represent Christ and his teachings to others, "in every dimension of life.

"BJU’s history has been chiefly characterized by striving to achieve those goals; but like any human institution, we have failures as well. For almost two centuries American Christianity, including BJU in its early stages, was characterized by the segregationist ethos of American culture. Consequently, for far too long, we allowed institutional policies regarding race to be shaped more directly by that ethos than by the principles and precepts of the Scriptures. We conformed to the culture rather than provide a clear Christian counterpoint to it.

2. So they admit they're bigots and misuse their religion
to further their personal nasty agendas. Now they can go all the way and admit they make the crap up about gays too. Until then they can stuff their apologies.

12. Ah, but their apology for that was so heartfelt.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The president of Bob Jones University on Friday said his school has ended its ban on interracial dating in wake of the controversy stirred by George W. Bush's visit to the fundamentalist Christian school.

"We don't have to have that rule. In fact, as of today, we have dropped the rule," Bob Jones III told CNN's "Larry King Live."

He said he met with administrators earlier in the day and decided to end the policy, because "I don't want to hurt the church of Jesus Christ."

Besides, Jones said, the policy "is meaningless to us."

7. So what are they going to do to make up for all of their
past mistakes? Are they going to admit that they were ignorant and destroyed many lives? I have always used this school as an example of racism and bigotry.

then they can pose in contrast as virtuous vanguards of good, if it's convenient. They're so fucking principled, ya know. :puke:

Still, I can't think of ANY other circumstance that would push them to this stunning admission of error, (conditional and self-sanitizing, though it is), than the landslide election of a black President!!!!

13. Apology NOT accepted.
I know it's good to forgive. But not them.

If they could get away with it, they would still be doing it.

14. "We conformed to the culture..." BULLSHIT!
"We conformed to the culture rather than provide a clear Christian counterpoint to it."
That is bullshit. The culture wasn't against interracial marriage in 2000. And I don't think it was against blacks being admited to college in 1971 either.
More lies from a bunch of racists and lairs. What a surprise.

17. DO NOT turn your back on them!
This is some insincere ploy. I don't know what they are up to, but I wouldn't trust them as far as I could throw them.
I lived near there. :scared:
