http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081122/ap_on_go_pr_wh/obama_economy

WASHINGTON – President-elect Barack Obama promoted an economic plan Saturday he said would create 2.5 million jobs by rebuilding roads and bridges and modernizing schools while developing alternative energy sources and more efficient cars.

"These aren't just steps to pull ourselves out of this immediate crisis. These are the long-term investments in our economic future that have been ignored for far too long," Obama said in the weekly Democratic radio address.

The goal is to get the plan quickly through Congress, with help from both parties, after Obama takes office Jan. 20. The plan, which envisions those new jobs by January 2011, is "big enough to meet the challenges we face," he said. The president-elect said he has asked his economic advisers to flesh out the recovery plan — one "big enough to meet the challenges we face. ... We'll be working out the details in the weeks ahead, but it will be a two-year, nationwide effort to jump-start job creation in America and lay the foundation for a strong and growing economy."

but I didn't know Obama has embraced it as a policy he wants to follow through on. Thanks for posting. I guess it was missed by most of us.

7. I agreed w/ your other post on this - it was posted and quickly buried...
...under all the whining/kvetching. IMO your point is valid. It WAS posted about earlier (his address/economic plan) - but just sunk under the complaints that far outnumber anything positive - even on the economy.

So DU didn't ignore it - but they shoved it aside quickly so as to get back to the bitching.

I had to go dig for ProSense's ignored thread about it in GDP to make my pissed-off post there (and then started a new thread of my own). :hi:

Sad, huh?

38. It is sad considering that the economy is the #1 issue right now and bu$hit has ...
..checked out, tweedle-dee and tweedle-dum (Bernanke/Paulson clown duo) have thrown up their hands, and we have an apparently brilliant President-elect with a proposed plan that IMO makes sense and he's the only one who has a plan at all.

I just wish he was sworn in already! It can't HAPPEN soon enough.

31. I never find DU much good for economic discussion anyway, to be honest
There's a small number of people who are well versed and insightful in economics and business, but they're dwarfed by the number of wannabe socialists and suchlike (most of whom have never lived under any other kind of economic system than what we have here). I'd say the general lack of discussion means passive acceptance, which is about the best you can hope for - especially on a plan with a relatively long time horizon.

44. I thought I saw it in LBN.
To me, that's where things like this should be, and with enough K&R's to keep it up top. I guess that's a DUer responsibility - to kick up the things that matter and are too "everyone agrees - why comment!" to stay afloat.

I used to think that the fact that something got recommended would keep it near the top, but it doesn't. I would like to see that changed, but I think it would get abused.

9. And what is it that you are bitching about?
That we don't pay enough attention to proposals?
Seems we have had a lot of them from the Dem's like impeaching bush and holding hearings and so forth that all came to naught.
So why now should we focus our attention on proposals and ignore all actions that may concern us?
We are not all partisan ideologies that just go along with what ever the leader decides is good for us, and I think that is a good thing.

You miss the point completely.
I'm not asking you to "go along" with anything. I'm just stunned that people are more interested in tearing each other apart here than they are with noticing a major public works project just announced by the president elect.

You seem more interested in arguing for the sake of being obstreperous, and not terribly interested in actually discussing the issue.

Nowhere did I suggest we should all be "partisan ideologues," but don't let me tear you away from that straw man of yours.

23. Critical thinking is often mistaken for being obstreperous
And if we had had a history of people doing what they say they will do then it might be just a straw man.
If people ar cynical then it is with reason, and the things that are proposed that are good for us are not a danger to our democracy, and the things that are promised and not delivered cause us to doubt what is truth or not....and that is why we talk about it.

Give us a break from the scolding.

27. No. Your straw man is your assertion that I'm requesting everybody be partisan ideologues.
And that is not, in any way, the point of my OP, nor is it what I said.

I'm not even demanding that everybody LIKE Obama's proposal (though I think it has the potential to be exactly what we need); what I'm poking at is that nobody's discussing it at all9/u].

Don't like? Then let's discuss it. But let's at least acknowledge the proposal and start a dialogue.

And thanks I would like to discuss it, when I get up to speed on the details...sory but I have not yet read any of them.

21. I saw it (I read everything). It appears that there is unfortunately a handful of folks on
this board who never liked Obama and probably never will. You won't find this handful starting negative threads, but they're more than willing to try to hijack the positive ones. Time and again I've climbed into a warm fuzzy "I love Obama" thread only to find it pocked with angry dissenters. My reaction is to get the hell out of there before I come unglued. It's a shame.

14. Brilliant strategy by Obama
He's setting out what he plans to do once in office. He's giving us plenty of time to tell our members of Congress to back his ideas. My guess is that he will, in the weeks to come, continue to talk about these plans, hopefully adding details as they are hammered out. He will be trying to get the majority of Americans behind him on these plans so that the Republicans in Congress will look like obstructionists if they try to oppose it.

20. I must say, so far I am really excited about O'B's economic staff.
I'm not excited about Hillary or Immanuel or O'Bs support for Leiberman (especially Homeland Security) or Daschel as Health/Humanservices Sec.

Richardson will be good for Commerce. Could be better for Sec. of State.

Sumner will be great as an economic advisor or even better at Fed Reserve Chairman.

The Attorney General will be great too. Only if he does his homework and acts on Bushco crimes and revises he Orwellian Patriot Act.

So far right now he's batting 175 for now

a Hallelujah Chorus is a very boring thread... And if anyone has objections to the (eminently sensible and commendible) plans, threads voicing those opinions would not be terribly happily embraced either..

I am at a loss to figure out what you would LIKE to read about these proposals. .

on edit: How about we post a transcript of the release and follow it with

26. This is the first I've heard of it
thanks for sharing.

It's just not going to go anywhere until we have Obama and his team in action. If anyone can do a lot of damage in a month and a couple weeks, it's good old Dubya.

Of course it's a great idea, it's Obama's. I voted for the man because he has great ideas, and I fully expect him to do the best of his ability to implement them. I'll be very disappointed if he does not. Until he starts though, what we're talking about is a possibility and not a reality. The possibility and it's potential is exciting, but not nearly as much as the reality would be. Meanwhile, we have to deal with the present, shitty reality, and hope it doesn't get worse.

It should not come as any surprise that a lot of us are more worried about immediate problems than we are about this plan for economic repair. Given enough time and support, I believe Obama will do a grand job... but he hasn't started yet.

32. For years, we've focused so much on outsourcing to improve profitability
It's a refreshing change to have a president who will look at how to rebuild America's workforce, rather than improving corporate bottom lines by shipping work to Manila and Shanghai.

At some point, and it may be that we're reaching it, there won't be enough well-paid Americans left to purchase the things we want to produce.

At the same time, we see all around us that our infrastructure has been started for investment and improvement.

To me, the proposal you describe is an exciting, far-reaching vision -- no another stopgap effort -- and is just what I expect to see from the Obama presidency.
