1. The subject line makes it sound like she dropped a load, grew wings, and fluttered around... |

"175 pounds lighter, woman takes flight"
I'm very happy for her in all seriousness. With a hubby, she had someone to live for.

3. I'm happy for her if this is what she wants but she just enforced stereotypes |
|
I weigh not a lot less than she did at her top weight. I'm the same age. I walk every day. I'm never out of breath (except after climbing tons of stairs). The one difference is I've been fat my whole life. The only difference is I've lost 150 lbs. twice and ... oh, well, regained it. Just like she probably will. The idea that morbid obesity is always simply caused by inactivity and overeating is nonsense. They may exacerbate it but only to the extent that my slender neighbor can "overeat" every day, not gain weight and therefore not be seen as an "overeater" and I eat 2000 calories a day and gain weight and be seen as one. I won't even get into the fun of being fat and walking down the street to a stream of invective from jerks and how that impacts inactivity. Oh, and then we get the fun of being told by Bush-era scientists that we're all probably stupid (that was a recent study) and here I sit with my 160 IQ.
And once she regains her weight (and she will) perhaps she'll realize that 95% of diets don't work. All we can do is eat healthfully and exercise just like thin people.

My boss was obese. He started exercising over 15 years ago. He lost over 150 pounds. And he has kept it up.

It's easier for men to maintain weight loss. Of the 5% of people who diet and maintain weight loss, most are men.
I know someone who won the lottery, too, but it's the rare exception not the rule.
I'll add my usual comment that in a hundred years we'll feel horrible about how we've treated fat people. It'll be too late for me but we can hope the next generation will be helped.

6. So everyone at the gym I see exercising; 95 percent aren't maintaning weght loss? |
|

Just about everyone in a gym is dieting and exercising. They have been fat before and some have never been overweight. Most are maintaining their ideal weight though exercise and diet. Are they part of the 5 percent you pulled out of your butt?

7. Your evident ignorance of the topic is too great to inform |
|
It's reminiscent of my uncle's "hey, we had snow way early this month, there is no global warming".
Do a Google ... you'll find out the facts.

Google has all the answers? Just like if I did a google on global warming, I will get a lot of "hits" on "there is no global warming" websites.

9. Look for real facts from medical authorities |

Talk to a couple of doctors who specialize in obesity (not a weight loss surgeon).
Beyond that, I've nothing to add. Have your last word and let me end this act of futility.

Yeah, those authorities ... who needs 'em.
Honestly, does anyone on DU actually want to come to understanding or is everyone just trying to pitch rhetoric to win debates?
That said, that IS my last word on the topic ... to you anyway.

11. 2000 calories? Seriously? |
|
I have to force myself to have 900-1200 a day, otherwise I get the shakes and dry-heaves, but I can't even imagine 2000 calories...

13. If you only eat 900 calories a day and you're a normal weight, then you're unusual |
|
Either that or you have an even slower metabolism than I do.

15. My favorite part of this story... |
|
is that it isn't an ad for bariatric surgery. Normally you read something like this, the woman had two-thirds of her stomach chopped out--leaving the perception that the only way losing major amounts of weight is possible is with life-threatening surgery. She did it through diet and exercise. Good for her.
