Iowa College Bases Musical on Bible's 'Terror' Stories
DES MOINES, Iowa — Don't expect to hear these Bible stories at church.

Cannibalism, rape, a bear that mauls children — this is the Bible?

They're among six stories from the Old Testament acted out in "Terror Texts," a musical at Northwestern College in Orange City.

Adding to the shocking nature of the stories are the theatrics, with actors decked out in Goth attire, a rock band and a mosh pit.

Barker uses the King James version of the Bible, and actors speak each verse word-by-word. It is not an interpretation or adaptation, like "Godspell" or "Jesus Christ Superstar."

3. I wonder what criteria they used to pick the six stories.
I mean, there's such an overabundance of them that it would be hard to pick just six. The SAB has 488 incidents in its 'short list' of cruel and violent parts of the Old Testament (769 in the full list).

5. Do they do the one where the daughters get their father drunk
and sleep with him? Nobody ever preaches on that.

7. That's Lot and his daughters.
Genesis:
19:32 Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father. 19:33 And they made their father drink wine that night: and the firstborn went in, and lay with her father; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose."

Incest and a threesome:

8. They were the virgins offered by Lot to satisfy strangers
in the Sodom and Gomorrah story which is so frequently referred to as a condemnation of homosexuality. And the treatment of his daughters is unworthy of moral commentary. Really wild weird stuff, even when you try to understand it.

9. Yes, but I guess the daughters thought they were doing a
service by preserving the family line. Maybe they thought it was the end of the world and they were the only people left? Not excusing the behavior, though.

10. Who knows what really happened or why.
Maybe it was retribution for offering them to strangers.

13. So should we be concerned that heterosexual marriage will lead to the acceptance of incest?
Both are promoted by this scandalous piece of pornographic literature! Who publishes this!?

15. Ah, I see that you too are concerned.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not prejudiced against teh straights. I have straights in my own family and I've had a straight woman do my hair for years. (She's so funny!) But there has to be a line and society has to protect the children. Sorry all you straight folks, but incest is wrong.

11. It's surprising how few Christians have actually read the Bible.
Edited on Sat Nov-22-08 11:02 PM by girl gone mad
When I tell Christians that I believe God as depicted in the Bible is an immoral character, I often cite the bear story. None of them know what I'm talking about.

Yes, Old Testament God believed that having children killed by bear mauling was an appropriate way to punish them for being disrespectful to an old man.

12. One also has to take into account the original Hebrew word for the lads in 2nd Kings 2:23 was naar.
If you look elsewhere in the Bible where the Hebrew word naar is used you would have to assume that Isaac was still a little kid at the age of 28.
