My Mom told my husband that my dad refused communion last week in protest of something to do with
Edited on Sat Nov-22-08 11:45 PM by lib_wit_it
some Catholic bigwig (or, big hat, probably)and Joe Lieberman. I missed that one. Anybody know what it was about?

My dad is totally into the Catholic thing, so this was big for him.

Eeeeeek! I had Lieberman on the brain from another thread. I meant Joe Biden!

1. There was a priest
who said he is not going to give Communion to any of his parishioners who voted for Obama.
That's illegal, I guess. And voting is supposed to be private. Don't know if that's what he's protesting or not.

2. Actually the Priest said
folks who voted for Obama would have to repent before getting Communion.

The Folks at his Diocese told him he was full of... himself...

3. It's not illegal for a priest to decide whether to give communion.
A priest can do anything they want in regards to providing any of their sacraments. They can be removed by their bishop or cardinal.

4. I meant
as separate religion and state. I suppose it would be legal for him to deny it due to political affiliation, but not "really" since he is not supposed to involve himself in political matters.

5. The parishioners should just consider they have not sinned based on their vote.
And go take communion.

And if any of the parishioners are of the mind they could do a rally with signs saying "Voting my conscious is not a sin!"

6. but isn't it illegal for priests to be sexually abusive?
the parochial school I went to after I graduated employed a priest later banned for sex abuse...should such knowledge be shrugged off as "that was in the old days"?

8. That is illegal depending on what it is.
If they abuse themselves sexually it isn't. Unless they do it in public.

7. No, I think it was more specific and had to do with some public statement a cardinal or somesuch
made regarding Joe Biden. I wonder if running with Obama is > = or < voting for him in the sin-O-meter!(I mistakenly wrote Lieberman in my OP--sorry.)

11. That's nothing. Bree told her son that his father was into
S&M, and the kid's not even gay! He's just pretending to be so he won't have to go to summer camp.

It's a Desperate Housewives thing.

13. A number of Bishops have been attacking Joe Biden
Well a number of Bishops have been attacking Joe Biden. One of them probably said something so offensive that your dad decided not to receive communion in protest. I love the church but I hate what the hierarchy is doing to it, they're destroying the church and taking a hacksaw to the body of Christ in order to obtain or hang on to their power.
