2. Because he said, "y'all" you think he's stupid?
I'm not a huge fan of country music (or rap for that matter), but I was not embarrassed by or for Tim McGraw. Then again, I don't walk around with some false sense of superiority.

4. I know zip about Tim McGraw, but ...
"y'all" is not an indicator of stupidity. It's actually a colloquial version of the second person plural pronoun, the equivalent of the French vous. Some of us smart folks from south of the Mason-Dixon line use y'all (or you all), and we are still capable of reading and understanding DU.

10. It is "people WHO know..." instead of "THAT know."
But you get points for spelling "y'all" correctly, as the apostrophe substitutes for the missing letters (you all).

26. Saying "people that" instead of "people who" is
way more stupid than "y'all." "That" refers to things like furniture/tractors, spaghetti. Use "who" when talking about human beings. Pretty basic middle-school grammar.

34. Good for y'all, indeed.
Anyone who says y'all is a white person who has lived in the south or is a black person or is a white or asian or latino person who has lived around white people from the south or black people, or is a person who has been listening to a lot of rap or country music or gospel. I don't want to ever meet a person like that! O the horrors!

43. My last name is Yaw. 'Yaw come back now, yaw hear?" I could go on, but
it's tedious........... on the front of a shirt I got one Christmas is a family picture and on the back is "Yaw Mom". My stepmother, who is from Jamaica, especially got a laugh out of that.

"Lighten up Francis."

44. What's wrong with "y'all"? it may not be "standard" American English but...
Edited on Sun Nov-23-08 05:31 PM by Odin2005
it's a perfectly OK 2nd person plural pronoun. English hasn't had a a singlar-plural distinction in the 2nd person ever since "Thou" disappeared, so I don't see a problem with a new pronoun developing to fill in the gap.

My speech uses the Mid-Western equivalent of "y'all," which is "y'guys (and y'guyses as the possesive-genitive form)

Languages change. If the Grammar Nazis don't like that they can STFU.
